In the last few weeks of my employment as a senior techie at a USA megacorp, I replaced my Teams profile picture with a #trans flag. With the assaults against us all over the world, and my employer "revisiting" its DEI policies, I felt the least I could do was up my visibility. As a nonbinary woman I felt reasonably out anyway. After all, my long established email sig was the corporate logo in pride colors. I was quite surprised on Teams calls (being voice centric, the arena I pass as female least) to get lots of reactions like "hey why is your profile pic... Oh." Last week a close colleague told me "nobody knew" I was trans. I must be doing nonbinary wrong! #transJoy

I also don't want to see children exposed to offensive, dehumanizing "content", but I am wondering why a ban is the cure. The examples the writer cites are all examples of simply unacceptable speech. If the social media platforms had effective moderation, this would not be a problem. If every instance of misogyny and other hate speech was taken down, and abusers got reliably suspended and banned, the experience of girls and minorities on these platforms would be infinitely better. The people doing the hate might be pushed to reconsider their behavior.Instead we will take away internet freedom from young people and force identity verification on everyone, undermine VPNs and so on. Why? Because that will be easier and cheaper for the tech giants.Don't ban girls from social media. Ban the abusers.#ukpol #fediverse

@futurebird You want trans to be boring? Well, I'm not entertainment, and don't want to be measured as such. Being trans can and should be a magical and wonderful journey to take in life, while at the same time it is just part of the background.

@futurebird I love it is certified to "Military Standards". I looked up IEEE-299, and it applies to enclosures larger than 2 m. The relevant standard for small enclosures in IEEE-299.1.

@ChrisMayLA6 I am getting an "All people's lives matter" vibe from some of the answers. Yes you can't force anyone to live their life in a particular way, but women face SPECIFIC issues in this regard. There is no male equivalent of what is happening right now to women in countries like Afghanistan. Men are not directly affected by the abortion bans spreading over the USA. Men are not getting their penises cut off so they can be free of sexual temptation and come to their wife's bed in a pure state. Men are not subject to a daily barrage of misogyny and rape culture.

I am going with a (javelin?) sand boa. This fellow seems to live in a burrow next to my melon patch. This picture shows it sunning its midriff with its head and tail still in the burrow (which allows for a quicker retreat). It seems to ignore me. the irregular splotches, smoothness overall color and lack of aggression suggest this is not an eeeeeek viper. I spotted it earlier and it eventually calmly looped underground. Now it is back suntanning. I'll keep the dog indoors for a bit.If I have got the species right, snakey likes to pounce on passing mice, lizards and snakes and stranglify them. Non venomous. Seen in the southern Peloponnese.Can anyone confirm my ID?#greece #snake #askfedi
