My #introduction: I'm a #TwitterMigrant. Interests include #Knitting, #theology, #Music, #Books, #USPolitics (although ready for a brief rest after the US midterms!!). I'm a #Lutheran, #ScoutLeader, #BoyMom to a pre-teen and wife to a good guy who is not at all interested in social media. I might talk about #CareerDevelopment as it's taking up a lot of brain space lately. This seems to be a more global, interesting, and kinder place than the blue bird. I'm excited to see where it goes!

I am not a tech person. I had absolutely *no idea* about effect of #Twitter using algorithms on my feed. I figured it just sent me things based on my overall interests, learning from my follows, RTs, etc.And...maybe that was true? I don't know. But now, 2.5 months into using #Mastodon, my feed here is enriching. I truly underestimated what it means to self-curate. #Art, #Knitting, #Books, #Science, #Politics, #News...it's a dinner party in an art gallery in a bookstore.

@arinbasu1 @atomicpoet It takes some time & effort to find your group & get connected, so you're showing up in people's home feeds. People can't respond if they don't see you.My own observation is that usually when people say they are not getting interactions, they have fewer than 500 Following and/or Followers. Not sure what the magic # is that will get you linked to your people here, but I think the rule of thumb is keep connecting! We are building it as we go!

@arinbasu1 @atomicpoet I agree that it is more complex. Following more people will increase your visibility & your chances of finding the interactions you want. But we're still "fishing in a small pond" compared to #Twitter. That said, the #Fediverse is growing in the number & diversity of people posting, as well as topics of interest. #Twitter is going in the opposite direction, although many are leaving only begrudgingly. It could go either way but I am rooting for the #Fediverse.

@ajroach42 I am moved by your thread. Thank you for your thoughtful writing. I wonder about current generations. We generally are constantly recording our thoughts, activities, & pictures on our phones, social media, music streams...how much of this will survive history? It is all on systems that will be outdated. It will all be inaccessible over time. I can't help but wonder, what will be known of us in 200 years, 2000 years?

My HP Pavilion is on its 2nd trip to HP care in only 2 years. Fediverse- how useful is an iPad if you primarily use your laptop for MS Word & Excel, internet browsing/social media posting, and e-ebook reading? I am ready to make the jump to Apple but am not sure on whether to get a new iPad MacBook. It’s for play, not work.#Apple #iPad #MacBook

@ecsd Thanks. I wish I had more tech knowledge to run Linux. It might be a side project one of these days, but I don’t want to try it out on my main personal computer.

@rychard @ecsd @system76 @purism Thanks, are they useful for people who aren’t tech savvy? It seems like you need some knowledge beyond the basics of to use a laptop. I can use mine (when it’s functioning) but I don’t know how it all actually works.
