@freemo On the right they do have a list. It's made by the Federalist Society and it tends to include a lot of people rated "Not Qualified to be a Judge."

@freemo So were any of these appointments rated unqualified by the bar association, or is it just the lack of whiteness that's the problem? Is there a lack of whiteness? I went to the June 28th apointments and I can't tell anyones' race. Can you? Last stat I heard was that Bidens picks are about 40% white. Is that a problem? What's the overall racial makeup of the Judiciary? Well, it's 78% white, significantly higher than the population. So maybe that the problem that needs resolving.https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/06/28/president-biden-names-thirty-fifth-round-of-judicial-nominees-and-one-new-nominee-to-serve-as-u-s-attorney/

@freemo @jaysonmassey Blind for US federal tax purposes is corrected vision of 20/200 or worse. For driving in California you need corrected vision of 20/40 or better to get a drivers license, although you can get a 30 day extension at 20/70 in order to get new glasses. Below 20/40 you need a doctors signed form and need to take a vision driving test. You have to be at least 20/200 to get a vision driving test. If you have a progressive condition like cataracts and 20/40 or worse you need to take the driving test every two years.

@freemo @StevenBeschloss He told his followers that a likely witness against him in one of his trials should be killed. So nothing new, really, and nothing will be done about it.

@freemo @StevenBeschloss It's the usual mob style veiled threat that can be carried out by underlings or random cult members. "XXX committed treason and should be executed."

@freemo @StevenBeschloss Well, in theory, intimidating witnesses is illegal. But theory and reality often diverge, especially where Trump is concerned.

@freemo @vwbusguy In general list, databases, directories are difficult to copyright unless there is a degree of creativity involved in the compilation. Note "work" or "effort" is not relevant, creativity is.The usual example is recipes. A recipe cannot be copyrighted as it is a set of ingredients and instructions. A book containing a set of recipes can be, primarily because to the text and photos describing the recipes. Yet every recipe in the book is not subject to copyright and may be freely used in other works. A book contains selected recipes from other books does not run afoul of copyright law, provided only the recipes are copied. I'd be surprised if the list of words in a dictionary can be subject to copyright, even if the definitions are.Back when there were phone books, telephone companies tried to protect their lists of names and numbers. Despite the amount of work needed to compile the lists, the lists were not protected because it was not creative work. https://www.justia.com/intellectual-property/copyright/lists-directories-and-databases/#:~:text=A%20work%20must%20have%20at,lists%2C%20directories%2C%20and%20databases.

@freemo @vwbusguy Copyright is automatic on works that are subject to copyright, (i.e. creative works.) Works that are not creative are not subject to copyright, automatic or otherwise. You can copyright a program you wrote to create a list of prime numbers. You cannot copyright a list of prime numbers, no matter how much effort it takes to compile. Even novel ordering (say by the number of 9s in the decimal representation) doesn’t make the list creative. Writing a novel featuring the numbers on the list is, on the other hand, creative. But if someone extracts the numbers from the novel and makes a list of them, the list is likely neither a copyright violation nor can it be copyrighted. Or a list of the first word of every paragraph for that matter, although the copyright holder could try to convince a jury that there was something original and creative about the words and their order, and financially harmful about its publication. I think they would lose.Since “Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Tel. Serv. Co.” effort is not a criterion for copyright. The work must be creative and original. An alphabetical list of English words probably falls below that threshold even though a dictionary containing even a subset of those words is well above it.Of course, in the US you can sue anyone for anything, and even if you don’t care about winning you can still cause a lot of financial pain. The law doesn’t need to be on your side if the money is.

@freemo @icedquinn The prompt is more easily copyrightable than the resulting "work".

@freemo It's even worse. That was the "traditional" pass code, and it was used on Jim Kirk's Enterprise, and possibly every Constitution, Constitution II and Galaxy class starship.Apparently the computer relies on some flawless identity recognition to identify the officers. Which is fine, because we only see identity theft (shape shifting aliens, holograms, magical beings, mind control, doubles from other universes, etc.) 10 times each season.https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Auto-destruct

@WiseMagic @TruthSandwich @admitsWrongIfProven @georgetakei The system (requiring a majority of the electoral votes rather than electing the one who gets the most) was designed to prevent 3rd parties. That's why there will not be a 3rd party president. The way a 3rd party succeeds is through the destruction of one of the other two parties, and then you end up with two parties. That hasn't happened in 167 years. Till then you are stuck with two choices. Voting for a 3rd party is effectively a vote for the candidate that is least like the one you voted for.

There is a fork in the road. A choice of paths, one labeled "difficult", one labeled "catastrophic." What do you think I'm talking about... (Please boost)

@Teri_Kanefield It's another chink in the armor of democracy. The courts refuse to protect it. Congress refuses to protect it. Tuberville is certainly doing his best to ensure that the military won't protect it. The state courts it now seems just don't wanna go to the trouble of protecting it.

@futurebird A blast from the past. When I moved to Berkeley in 1988 there was still a Community Memory terminal in the laundromat where I did my wash. I found it interesting, although even at that time I had access to worldwide (although non-internet) email and remote login through work.
