We've had a lot of new people arriving here lately. So I thought I'd share my own tips for new arrivals! Here's eight simple things that you need to do, if you're going to really get along with the fediverse::goose_honk: Hold a chicken in the air:goose_honk: Stick a deckchair up your nose:goose_honk: Buy a jumbo jet:goose_honk: Bury all your clothes:goose_honk: Paint your left knee green:goose_honk: Extract your wisdom teeth:goose_honk: Form a string quartet:goose_honk: Pretend your name is Keith#FediTips #NewArrivals

@futurebird A few thousand would put me into a position where I could look to buy a house immediately (I'm saving up a deposit, but I'm not quite there yet). A few tens of thousands would mean I could buy with a much larger deposit, which in turn would give me greater freedom in finding the ideal place.Right now, that's by far the biggest potential change to my life that I can actually control. So that's my answer. I'll stop being reliant on the rental market and I'll buy a house. When do I get my few thousands? I'll be awaiting the cheque with bated breath.

@futurebird Babylon is the first thing I think of when I hear Babylon. Where the Babylonians came from.

@futurebird The only Romans who really left were the soldiers. And some administrators, I suppose. The Romans in Britain at that time were overwhelmingly Britons (Romano-British is perhaps the most accurate term), and they didn't go anywhere. Their social structures evolved into the new, locally ruled reality.

Whatever sentence may emerge, whatever may happen on appeal (I'm assuming there's a right to appeal, perhaps wrongly, I know nothing about the French judicial system), I still want to congratulate France because - if nothing else - there's a willingness to see 'using excessive money to distort elections' as a bad thing that should be stopped. We could all do with more of that attitude, I think.

@icedquinn Most countries manage just fine with having rules that control money in politics and consequences for breaching those rules. I'm sorry that the US has political courts that don't want such rules to exist.

@futurebird It would require a lot of densely populated places to not actually be densely populated. So you could get in touch with people in densely populated places, and ask them to just look out of the window.

@chu Seems very sensible to me. I sometimes think a lot of people fail to see the difference between doing what needs to be done today - kick out the Nazis - and fighting to create longer term improvements tomorrow.I'm glad that Canada didn't lose sight of the importance of immediately kicking out the Nazis.

@Nickiquote Yep. I protested about that back when it was still a Bill. One of the first things that politicised me (along with the ban on protesting during the visit of Jiang Zemin the same year). My biggest concern then was the power it gave the Home Secretary to designate *literally any group of people* as a Terrorist Organisation, via secondary legislation, and that 'being supportive' included attending any kind of event that a member of the proscribed organisation was speaking at, even if you went there to protest against them. And that this could be used to prosecute anyone as a terrorist if they happened to be in the vicinity of a protest or similar event. And, well, look where we are now.

@futurebird Many on the left assume everyone agrees with them. Many on the right assume everyone should be forced to agree with them. So the ones on the right will happily to anything to get their way, no matter the cost. And the ones on the left won't do a single thing to work against this.

@futurebird I'm lucky - because I work in emergency care I can get both covid and flu shots for free, no qualifications about health or age or anything. That isn't a particularly helpful response, sorry.

I was going to write a subtoot about something unnecessary that a prick posted at me earlier. But you know what? I'm not going to. There's no reason. It wouldn't be a good thing. There are much nicer things to post about.

@futurebird As a tall person, I don't want a bathroom without a tub. I want a tub built for tall people.

Friends, we're all here on fedi, so many of us have no fondness for AI and its nonsense, nor for the very rich who are using the bubble to get richer, nor for the buffoons who are devoted to it. I understand that. But please remember, when the bubble bursts, it won't be those billionaires who suffer. It won't really be the buffoons. It'll be ordinary working class folk who happen to be employed by an organisation that will be hit. Doesn't even have to be an employer that works directly with AI. Could be a caterer whose biggest client is involved with the business. Could be a cleaning company that cleans offices for a business that supplies components that are used in data centres that host AI stuff. And so on.Remember 2008, 2009. We all know whose fault that crash was, and we all know who suffered most as a result, and those two groups were quite separate.

By the way, please don't anyone interpret this as saying that we need AI to thrive in spite of its harms. Absolutely not. I'm thinking more of the celebratory posts that I increasingly see. We can acknowledge the benefits of AI causing less harm, whilst also respecting the huge numbers of blameless people who will bear the burden of the collapse.Don't celebrate the loss of low- and middle-income jobs, folks. Have solidarity.

Morning everyone. Hope you're all okay. I seem to have become 46 overnight which I could probably have done without. Ho hum.

@afewbugs @zaty Every few years, the Pontcysyllte aqueduct carrying the Llangollen canal has its plug pulled out for maintenance purposes.
