OpenAI wants regulation. This is what they want1. A new regulatory agency. They do not want to be regulated by the FTC because they want to pretend that they are not just another corporate entity trying to make money. But also, a new agency is likely vulnerable to regulatory capture. If staffed by people sympathetic to OpenAI, this agency can give grief to emerging competitors

OpenAI proposed regulation contâd:2. Create a set of standards for AI models. Note the emphasis on self-replication and exfiltration into the wild. These are existential doom scenarios. OpenAI would rather be regulated on impossibilities rather that than harms like misinformation, defamation, discrimination, or privacy.

@pluralistic unfortunately the ultra rich also believe that they alone can save the world (for people like themselves) and that those extra dollars above their own current lifestyle needs have *extra* utility if it *could* at some point be used to get us to Mars or prevent the AI apocalypse or something. Rationality canât beat rationalization.

It is quite notable that the White House and Democrats are talking about AI policy pertaining to equity, inequity, and sustainability, whereas Silicon Valley tech industry is largely talking about regulation pertaining to the singularity.Given how Silicon Valley tech billionaires are lining up behind GOP Senate and Presidential candidates. Expect AI doomerism to show up a a Right-wing talking point for attacking the Left.
