@freemo I remember the feeling I got the first time I started practicing calligraphy. It was simply amazing. However, that effect wears off rather quickly and now it takes a lot for me to impress myself. I started with a pilot parallel pen (3,8 mm) and moved on from there.I've noticed that switching between a wide and a narrow calligraphy nib changes everything. My italic is acceptable in all sizes, but textura quadrata and fraktur just don't work if the nib is narrower than 1,9 mm. Therefore, I would recommend trying wider nibs too. You'll be amazed.

@freemo it's wide enough to give you plenty of line variation, so I would say it's good enough for italic, foundational and uncial. The edge of the line is probably about as crisp as with a stub nib, which is acceptable. Writing with an actual calligraphy pen is really scratchy and IMO it doesn't really add all that much to the resulting line structure.

@freemo Looks like a Lamy Safari or something quite similar. I have one of those and also the stub nibs and have done a fair bit of calligraphy with them. However, I haven't tried a music nib, but you have. How would you compare them? Is the ink flow equal? Does one feel scratchier than the other?

@kgary Welcome to mastodon. I'm relatively new myself, but I started finding interesting people by using the search. Searching for interesting hashtags also showed who are writing about interesting topics, so that was a good way to find more people to follow. Actually more than a few of those people are from other mastodon servers. Turns out, it doesn't matter because the different servers are not isolated.

@kosame @design_RG I too would like to pin a certain hangtag or even a collection of hashtags (think of multireddits), in order to receive relevant content. Although, I suppose peoplecentricism is probably the whole point here, and I'm just missing it by thinking these thoughts. In defence of #Mastodon I do have to point out that I enjoy the fact that I can make lists based on my preferences. Some people tend to post about a certain topic, so I can group them together in one list.

@ae Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks a lot like #moss to me. Could be #lichen too, since it can be nearly any colour; including green. It's just that the smooth texture looks distinctly mossy to me.

@freemo This climate discussion is a good example of something I like call "modern tribalism". Group A has certain goals and ideas and if you're part of it, you automatically have to affirm all of them. If you're a member of group B you automatically have to oppose every statement group A makes, no matter how true/false they may be. At best, this setting produces some hilarious results, and at worst the results are truly tragic and depressing.I expect that most members of QOTO are reasonable enough think for themselves and resist these tribal urges that seem to play a role in the human psyche.

@realcaseyrollins It's up again. Didn't keep track how long, but it felt like an entire day.

@popey Since raspberry is technically an aggregate fruit, perhaps we could borrow that term for a while. Proper biologists/botanists out there might have a better suggestion.

@fribbledom isn't that the percentage from the whole population? Elderly people and young children have a significantly higher mortality rate than the rest of the population.Source: https://newsobservatory.com/here-are-the-coronavirus-mortality-rates-by-age-group/

@fribbledom Yeah, you're right. I just took a better look at the available data and children seem to be fairly safe after all. Therefore it would seem that there's no reason to close down schools at the moment.

@freemo Actually, this could have practical applications too when you want to inspect the mouth for some medical reasons. Let's say you want photograph the teeth for instance.

@sir Well that's just one way of connecting several words together. German, Swedish, Finnish and many other languages have something similar, but what makes English interesting in this case is the way it's shortening the words.

@RTP @freddylove I like to think of privacy and security as complete package with three different layers.Level 1, criminals: If you make the wrong compromises in this level, criminals will take whatever they can from you. Get started by making sure everything is updated and you understand what you're clicking on the web.Level 2, normal people: If you make the wrong compromises, your friends, relatives and other people will know things about you that you didn't want to tell them about. If you don't use social media, this isn't really a concern for you. If do, make sure you understand that when you are posting something, you are standing on the stage with millions of people looking at you.Level 3, computers: This is the hardest level, because Google, Amazon and Facebook are tracking nearly everything on the web these days. You can easily reduce this a fair bit, but those tricks are outside the scope of this post. Reducing it greatly requires some serious dedication and pretty harsh compromises most people aren't willing to do. Completely eliminating all tracking is something I don't think is even possible any more in this day an age. if you know of a method other than going completely offline and living in a cabin off the grid in the mountains, please let me know.

@wolf480pl @izaya @2ck I have to say, that structure is very unusual, but to me it still looks perfectly coherent.

@wolf480pl @izaya @2ck Having studies a little bit of calligraphy and the history of writing, I’m pretty sure some of these odd conventions came from necessity. Nowadays, in the age of infinite screen space, there’s no need to combine separate letters into ligatures or collapse multiple closing symbols into one. In the age of expensive vellum things were very different. However, that still doesn’t explain silent letters though. That’s just wasted space IMO.

@freemo @trinsec That’s very beautiful. I’m also trying to make my everyday handwriting more copperplate, but it’s still really far from what you’ve got there. BTW it looks like you’re using a flex nib of some kind. I’m just using a boring but consistent EF nib from kaweco.

@freemo Those things have been designed for mineral exploration. BTW you’ll also need a stationary base station which will provide a reference measurement. The difference of the two will be your final magnetic anomaly map, which will be able to display certain ferromagnetic minerals such as pyrrhotite and magnetite. If you’re looking for gold necklaces in the beach, this method might not be what you’re looking for.
