Traffic is wild out there. 🤣 Up til now, cars would drive in a random direction and every few seconds would turn a random amount. This was chaotic. _This_ is meant to be adding tiles that force the cars to turn corners. It's not working hahaha. As usual for me though, if it generates good gifs, it's worth pursuing.#pico8

Street Racing! Cars can now turn corners, and....sometimes they just don't. Been a fun diversion getting this to work. Now I have to rein it in a bit. Still fancy the stock car game idea though.#pico8

My tiny raycaster from earlier in the year is tinyer this week, squeezing under the #pico1k limit, but with some more gameplay.I've gone for a hyper-basic mining game as it removed the need for authoring a map (previously stored in the spritesheet to work with pico-8 edu URLs). I'm really pleased with the depth shading too. This used to use a palette in the spritesheet too, but now is handled by a limited palette that stores 4 floor colours, then 4 dark-light colour ramps.#pico8

Not sure if compression improves or ruins this. It's definitely interesting! Here's a peek at the current palette, plus a picture showing the dithering that sells the effect. #pico8

Rather than a time limit, I'm planning on giving the player impetus/motivation by slowly flooding the level with lava. This debug map shows the random generated levels (2 for loops, picking tiles from an array with preselected ratios of tile types - crude, but fits) and the lava flooding in spaces that as passable by the player. Lava tiles picks a random tile around them, and if it is passable, it too becomes lava. It's going much faster here for illustrative purposes. #pico8 #pico1k

Fun side effect, the lava tiles are always "outside", so it is like the lava melts the ceiling when it spreads to an indoor tile. Also funny to watch it happen at breakneck speed.#pico8 #pico1k

the lava + some doom style lava-hurt behaviour starts to make the game tense, but exciting. Need to sort a "return to the start point" end state. Currently have ~20 bytes, but need to do some squashing.#pico1k #pico8

Running out of tokens because I added a partial mini map. Going to keep it in some form I hope, if I have the space#pico1k #pico8

the minimap is gone! Was too many tokens and dilutes the game by taking the player out of the environment (and I can't do that elegantly given the constraints). What is a _bit_ more elegant is allowing the player to "paint" the indestructible rock walls, but only a limited number of times. That way the player builds their own landmarks to find their way back to the centre of the map.#pico1k #pico8

The age-old "only make an engine from scratch if you never want to ship the game you're building it for" should be paired with "but use it as an excuse to get really good at documentation, even if no one will read it" for a slightly more positive spin.(Yes, I am making a thing that is not a game but lets you make a game and no I have not made a game with it yet hahaha)
