@todayilearned I assume you meant juvenile. If so, it’s true. And well beyond.

@grammargirl @Logophilius I don’t see that happening either. But Andy has correctly identified why we wound up with all these substitutes in the first place — English doesn’t differentiate between the singular and collective you. And people feel the need. I grew up with “you guys”. But I need a replacement now that I’m trying to be more inclusive. How about a poll for a new and better collective “you”?

@todayilearned The text talks about corn cobs. But what is pictured is a corn husk. Which actually makes more sense for wiping, I guess.

@grammargirlOne of the cool things about the English language is how many words we have available for use. But if we allow conflating of words like eager/anxious or literally/figuratively then we are losing part of the richness of the language.

@grammargirl This usage has been around for decades. Plus the logic doesn’t make me cringe — unlike the use of literally to mean figuratively.

@grammargirl @ccount I used to read encyclopedias for fun. But dictionaries? That’s some real dedication.

@grammargirl Back up everything on that computer that you care about right now. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.Someone will have to look at the actual computer. But I’d guess you have a loose or bad memory socket. I’d further guess that it’s only accidentally working at the moment.

@grammargirl I suspect you are just the person to answer a question that has been on my mind for the last few days. We just watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” a few days ago. In it, Bad Nick uses the phrase, “Adam’s off ox”. I’ve done a search and it’s a regionalism similar to “don’t know him from Adam” but slightly more emphatic. But none of the sources state what region(s) it’s from. Do you have any idea?

@grammargirl @maco My dad had a button he wore around his neck. Sorry, I don’t remember the name of the company. If he pressed the button, the company got pinged and they called us siblings. If the cardiologist didn’t recommend something like this, you might want to find another cardiologist.

@grammargirl @maco Well crud. I did a quick search. All the alert systems I found assume that if you lose consciousness, you fall. Hmm. I’m not seeing anything online that specifically detects loss of consciousness. Does her heart rate fall?

@grammargirl @maco Good luck with your search. You’d think there’d be a demand for something like that, given the graying of America. Maybe there are technical difficulties.
