When I was a kid, you would often see fathers doing random things with an earbud stuck in one ear listening to their pocket transistor radio. They were listening to sports. I have now become that guy - but I am listening to Bitcoin podcasts instead. π

Some say governments can force people to use their debased fiat money. As fiat and even hard assets stop functioning as reliable ways to store unseizable value, Bitcoin will increasingly become the only useful measure of personal wealth. Government workers, like everyone else, will demand a salary priced in Bitcoin. As people realize the government can't create or seize Bitcoin to pay them, they will be forced to directly exchange productive work for Bitcoin instead.

@Sosthene That is a fair concern, but they won't be able to steal from everyone with a single key stroke (eg. Greece). They will have to go after each person individually. Privacy/plausible deniability tech and good opsec will make it potentially very expensive. Occasional gun ownership will also help create a here immunity. π

@nvk Yubikey NEO is pretty convenient to use if your phone has NFC. Tap it to see your 2FA codes.

@pete @dsmatthews Sweden didn't do lock downs A) because their constitution doesn't give the government that power [what an amazing concept] and B) because health authorities had previously war-gamed it out and found it didn't ultimately help. But *now* they've gone and changed the law anyway. @eiaine It's an encrypted flash drive; for ffs. For much less than $200M I'm sure he can get some hardware hackers to copy it and/or extract the private key. I believe most Bitcoin hw wallets have been shown to be vulnerable to physical attack - I'm sure some rando hard drive even more so.

@alan8325 @jb55 @pj Perhaps like a mesh network where nodes are incentivized like lightning network nodes when they relay of data?

@eiaine The article only implies "guilty by association", but doesn't raise any specifc technical concerns. Also no mention of how open source code can not only be audited but also forked.I call bullshit on her conclusion:"If they ever posed a threat to the United States βΒ and to the corporate monopoly power that calls the shots here βΒ their funding would be pulled and they would cease to exist"

@eiaine The phone # as your Signal ID is a problem for sure, but bootstrapping an alternative communication network is hard. Alternatives have barely any usage. I would like to put a Signal fork in F-droid that removes the phone registration and the servers, which are a single point of failure (and maybe trust). I wonder where I send my NSA grant application to fund this effort?

@eiaine @Chaotic If the CIA was involved, think it was more likely created for banal reasons like to pay bribes and funnel money to secret agents. Probably for insider graft too.Like Tor they needed a public network so covert payments could hide in a crowd. It also had to be private enough to not get tracked or stopped by current AML mechanisms.

@nvk I am now just blocking these clowns immediately. They are attention whoring a green authoritarianism message that doesn't deserve a response.

@bitcoinedu If Bernanke was being honest, he would have said, "we lent them $ 0.5T so they wouldn't dump their US treasuries." Which would have exposed what a con job Fed manipulation of interest rates is.

@pete Reminds me of the idea behind the classic book, "Bureaucrats How To Annoy Them!" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4416489-bureaucrats-how-to-annoy-themSomeone needs to write an updated version for the current age.
