@pluralistic @Gargron Gargron, you should do this. You will find no one who's a bigger fan of what Mastdon is and could be than Mr. Doctorow, here. If you lose him, a LOT of us will go with him. That's not meant as a threat. Just a statement of fact. I trust Doctorow's judgment, here.

I just finished #PicksAndShovels last night. Really fun read. It clearly comes from @pluralistic's heart. I won't say anything about the plot bc it unfolds beautifully and then folds itself up in a very satisfying way, but I will say that along with being a thriller set in the early days of computing, it's a coming-of-age story about being young and full of good intentions but with lots and lots to learn. I think a lot of men will relate to it. I hope it's not the last Hench novel!

@hmorrell @pluralistic Which implies the next one will be about him taking math classes in high school. :)

@hmorrell @pluralistic Maybe, but #PicksAndShovels really feels like the origin story to me. It touches on and strongly implies Marty's teens so that it can get him to university.Personally, I'd like to see his early forensic accountant adventures: in his prime, doing his thing, maybe getting into the occasional actual scrape.Hint hint, @pluralistic

I found a technician who'd work on a Linux machine, and she solved my problem (I had no wifi whatsoever) the same day that she received it.I realize the culture of Linux "fix it yourself!" and I tried. I got a buddy to help. We couldn't figure it out, so I paid a professional to fix it and then tell me how she did it.I want to normalize this. For Linux to be viable, it can't just be a hobby OS. Paying pros to fix it, and set it up for you, is part of that.#linux #foss #floss #OpenSource

Hey, Linux people: a LOT of folks are screaming off Windows right now.Be. Kind. To. Them. They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.#FOSS #FLOSS #OpenSource #Linux #Ubuntu #Debian #LinuxMint

I'm sitting in a public space listening to some dumbass complain that he can't short-term rent rooms in his house."It's my land. It's my house. How are they gonna tell me I can't have... someone over? I can do anything I want. As long as it's not, you know, illegal." Yo, dipshit, unregulated rentals are indeed illegal where you live. You just want to run an unregulated business. Fucking libertarians.#BCPoli #AirBnB #dumbasses

The thing I keep coming back to, over and over, about Linux is this:It's an operating system. You can make it do all kinds of cool tricks, but I'm extremely fortunate to get in at a time when it's just a functional OS that *doesn't* have a bunch of spyware and "AI" garbage in it.[contented sigh]#FOSS #FLOSS #OpenSource #Linux

@futurebird I'm 49, so I can't answer the question of whether all this is real, but I can confidently say two things.First, for conservatives, "family" means patriarchy: men *owning* their wives and children, most especially girls. When they say the "family" is being destroyed, they mean they fear the erosion of patriarchy.

@mekkaokereke I only found out a couple of years ago that Einstein was so disgusted with racism in American academia that he exclusively visited HBCU's later in his life. Albert knew what was what.

@futurebird As more and more of our stuff is not just mass-produced, by made by "AI," imperfections are going to become more and more valuable. The rich will be able to afford to be surrounded by things made by human hands and human minds. The poor will be able to afford crap and slop, even more so than is already the case.

@futurebird Of course. The predictable outcome of capitalist incentive structure is to try to construct a consumer who can't refuse the product.

@futurebird @alexwild The corollary being: no, they are *not* going to leave and their their money with them if you raise their taxes by a few percent. The claim they're going to leave must be read as *threats*, and empty ones at that.
