@strypey I covered this in my PhD thesis, link in profile. It was mostly in relation to gender stuff i.e. the genders of people v their avatars but also more generally about how people's conceptions of things are revealed by the features of their avatars. IIRC there are some references re this stuff in there.

@Grandalf @strypey omg yes. So mush so. That particular institution had a policy of having a "normal person" on their ethics committee. i.e. any regular member of the public could apply. The result in this case was an elder Christian with a pronounced prejudice against Paganism and negative technical knowledge. This was accompanied by the disease of our culture, the rest of the committee were not willing to speak up and rock the boat and let him keep objecting to crazy things.

Hey academic people. I am looking for collaborators for a project about governance on Wikipedia. Basically the project will involve examining the talk pages, administrator actions, arbitration committee decisions, and Wikipedia policies to see how well the policies are adhered to and how this is affecting editor retention and article accuracy on Wikipedia. @bohemianchic Well, I reckon we are going to need all or some of; a data scientist, a software person, an ethics person, a person to run the wiki for it, a social sciences person, a linguist, a governance person, a Wikipedia person. Someone who loves strangers arguing on the internet. I can fill some of these roles.

@ct_bergstrom Google isn't the only way to find things. People aren't going to stop wanting good things. We might go back to things like webrings. There has been a bit of a renaissance in blogging since the big five got enshittified or became obviously fascist.

@ct_bergstrom Remember DMOZ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMOZ There is no reason something like it couldn't be done again. It's strength was that actual humans reviewed each addition to the directory.

@Gina The absolute hypocrisy of it is breathtaking. When people mention to me that they don't like it when immigrants come into their communities and try to do things in different ways I always say, yeah, imagine how the indigenous Australians felt when all the Europeans arrived. But somehow that isn't ever considered a valid point.
