Josh(from what I know) is paying for basically everything and advertises the instance on his podcast, meaning that he has the foundation for a big-ass instance that he'd probably never be able to make on his own. The string attached is that Josh is the one with final deciding authority. But if Josh doesn't override his decisions or bother to monitor fedi very often, then it becomes a lot more reasonable. Crunk is operating under a tyrant, and he is likely content to stay that way because Josh is too lazy to countermand him frequently. If josh ever gets more free time, that's when kiwifarms.cc will experience some rough waters.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @Dr_Barlos I could understand being blinded by "muh alt-tech doesn't work" the first time, even though that's jaded old man behavior to not even try it out, but to fuck it up a second time is just unbelievable. There's a difference between full on baby-rage and feeling unpleasant internally. I think if somebody has a strong interest, there's always going to be a lack of fulfillment if they can't do it, though this is admittedly stretching the bounds of what upset means. As for the fourth case, I omitted it because I thought "it's impossible, people don't get mad about things they don't care about" I've now remembered people arguing on the internet, and I must concede the point.Serves me right for trying to defend an autism test.

Free speech advocacy and e-drama aren't fundamentally opposed, but the latter heavily disincentivizes the former. As a pertinent example, let's use loli:Suppose you run with e-drama circles and have a vested interest in having no weaknesses for enemies to exploit. With that in mind, is it wise to defend lolicon? No, it would just be painting a target on your back optically, even if you were doing it for free speech reasons. Even if you personally disagree, life would be a lot easier if you just agreed and didn't end up getting dogpiles in every chatroom with pedophile or somesuch. You can even dogpile others yourself since over-the-top disgust acts as both a sword and a shield.A notable example of this occurring is with Joshua Moon himself. In a livestream with Godspeed Zoom(later proven to be a pedophile who watches real cp), Josh got lambasted by him and his discord friends for platforming pedophilia on 16chan. They were taunting him like schoolyard children and shouting over him, calling him a pedophile while he defensively talked about not believing in victimless crimes, and I think this made an impression. It got him to take a more pragmatic but less principled stance. I think recently he's taken to claiming that he started thinking lolicons are pedophiles when he saw their behavior on 7chan while moderating. That's retarded on the face of it since he's been involved in image board moderation long before 7chan existed. It was a purely pragmatic move -- a classic case of e-drama adaptation.Once you understand that this behavior generalizes to anything that can produce a disgust response, things become much more predictable. The extreme anti-porn crusading is e-drama adaptation to avoid ending up like the amazing atheist or worse. There are principled reasons to be opposed to porn, but pragmatism in e-drama is not one of them.It's not universal though, just a common behavioral pattern that I've noticed. @japananon The clamor around Meta EEE on the fediverse is overblown, I think. Gab allowed federation, and rather than siphoning users and instance owners from the network, the other instances ended up taking users from Gab, and they shut down federation. Meta's attempt will probably look similar.

I adore the OTW, and AO3. They are an organization that has been upholding free speech in fanworks for the longest time--they allow anything, fanfiction involving real people, lolis, racism. It is all permitted under their policy as long as you aren't directly harassing other users. They have stuck by it despite some outcry from their users to ban this or that. Most other organizations especially ones that spawned from very liberal fanfiction circles would be perfectly fine banning racism because it wouldn't effect that many people. But not the OTW, they've stuck with it.It's not often talked about by free speech advocates, but the organization is pretty awesome. They're one of the few organizations of their like that I really admire because they strike all of my checkboxes for protecting freedom. They don't let themselves get pushed around by our draconian IP laws, they allow racism and extreme edginess that would stoke calls for deplatforming on any other site, they allow perverse fetish pornography that would be completely illegal in more cucked countries, and it's all done in the neutral spirit of archival. If it's legal, it's allowed.There's not a lot of people that are willing to go to bat for all of those things, but the few that are, are my favorite people in the world.

@petergleick Fun fact about Stephen Gould, his book, The Mismeasure of Man, stated that Samuel Morton mismeasured skulls to further a point that caucasians had superior intelligence. It was later found out after remeasuring the skulls decades later that Morton's measurements were much more accurate than Gould's measurements, and that Gould had completely lied for political reasons.
