#BanksiaIntegrifolia, aka the coast banksia, is a tree that grows along the east coast of Australia. One of the most widely distributed Banksia species.This one however is stunted and ground dwelling for some unknown reason (to me). Maybe because of competition (plenty of gumtrees here), self-propagated or damage, not sure. But the woody branches look healthy enough and I’d suggest it’s longevity seems assured. Yet another beautiful #sunset in Melbourne tonight, from a suburban street in #glenwaverley #Australia.As the sun was setting in the west (first pic), the remnants of the sunshine illuminated the #Dandenongs (our hills out to the outer eastern-suburbs). Notice how the collective hilltop looks bronze-like in colour from the sunshine, reflecting off the 500+ hectares (estimation) of foliage in the distance? Whilst a small proportion of these hills are a little bare, most are covered with local flora such as densely packed #Gumtree’s. The shining silvery squares are house roofs and you can see two layers of cloud cover separated by grey sky. The bottom cloud has a top layer of orange from the reflection of the sun. You can see some birds in the distance too. So too a dome structure (from a local shopping centre), power lines and green trees in the foreground. It’s chilly now (just after 7pm) and daylight savings ends along the eastern sea board of Australia, tonight. So that’s an extra hours sleep (bonus!) but the evenings will become darker sooner as we head deeper into autumn and soon, into our winter. #AcaciaPycnantha, most commonly known as the golden #wattle, is a tree native to southeastern Australia. Snapped this just now. It grows to a height of 8 m (26 ft) and has quite unique flattened leaf stalks (best description), instead of true leaves. My childhood home had one of these on the nature strip. It was at least three times the breadth of this one pictured and a balanced rounded shape. Well, maybe an overestimation of its size, based on my younger-self’s recollection. But it was big and bloomed like crazy during #winter time. Golden flowers appear in abundance, during late winter.They’re profusely fragrant, especially late in the season. Meet the gorgeous SalviaInvolucrata! Also referred to as the roseleaf sage. It is native to the Mexican states of Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, growing in shady places such as the edge of forests.It does pretty well here too, in #melbourne #Australia. I believe these tightly bunched blooms are from a #ViburnumTinus, aka laurustinus, laurustine or laurestine, a species of flowering plant in the family Adoxaceae.Native to the Mediterranean region, Viburnum tinus prefers shady, moist areas. Insects pollinate this shrub, I read with interest. The detail and complexity of the flowering masses (see close-up; first pic), are something else. These are everywhere in this city of #melbourne… flowering profusely. Caught a #bee in busy search for nectar on these two lovely #Camellia in #glenIris #Australia recently. The blooms on these mid-sized trees are bountiful and healthy as anything. My ID app doesn’t lock this down to a specific species, but I suspect it’s a #daffodil from the genus Narcissus.However, Google Lens does indeed confirm it is a daffodil! Otherwise known in some parts, as #jonquil.Nevertheless, this footpath garden outside of a #Malvern home in #Australia brings to mind feminine beauty, when I see the elegance of these plants. The trusty flora ID App tells me these leaves belong to an #AmericanSweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), which is native to warm temperate areas of eastern North America and tropical montane regions of Mexico and Central America. Sweetgums are recognizable by the combination of its five-pointed star-shaped leaves (similar to maple leaves) and its hard, spiked fruits.This tree is almost bare, however a handful of beautiful leaves still remain. Notice how the setting sun accentuates the rich network of veins throughout each leaf structure?
