@kev @mike they're not wrong. Mastodon is potentially harmful to Twitter

@cancel @neauoire @aw except that's not how people generally use them. Chromebools teach kids that computers are merely a terminal to corporate controlled Internet. Imagine trying to explain to someone who has only ever used Google Docs how to use vi or even libre office. In a consumer cloud context free software is barely comprehendable. I'd seriously rather schools still had Apple II's

If anyone happens to stumble upon this thread, @tilvids is working pretty flawlessly for me now.

The python requests library is widely used and respected. But it contains almost 7,000 lines of code and with it's own dependencies over 24,000 lines of code. Each one of those could have bugs or security holes someday. Having a dependency like this could or expose you to things like https://medium.com/checkmarx-security/typosquatting-attack-on-requests-one-of-the-most-popular-python-packages-3b0a329a892dDid you know the python standard library can make http requests with urllib? It is a little clunkier interface wise, but it works for everything I've thrown at it.

There's a lot in the standard library that people don't even know about including: an http server, the ability to use a sqllite database directly, turtle-style graphics, C bindings for gui applications with TCL and probably more I haven't learned about. By learning what is in it, or other languages standard libraries you can make your applications and libraries much more stable, secure and resilient. Read those docs before reaching for a third party alternative!

@viznut here is what I'd go for:* As many display standards as feasible. VGA and composite are still pretty useable today* Some kind of user expandable io. I'm thinking something like gpio, but I don't think that was a concept in 1990. Some early expansion ports on 80s computers would do. Being able to wire in new io when the old stuff doesn't work is useful* Socketed chips* Intrinsically simple but useful software

Has anyone ever heard of software that takes an epub, divides it up into chunks and then creates an RSS feed of those chunks dated at regular intervals? That way you could read a book alongside your blogs in your new reader. If not, should I make a thing like this? I think I read about something similar that turns audiobooks into podcast feeds.Boosts welcome#ePub #Books #RSS

@lucifargundam @pganssle seems reasonable to me that it would work that way. Not sure what there is to discuss

@twizzay I have a neighbor who uses a leaf blower to blow all the snow in his back yard into big piles. Weird.

@twizzay he has small dogs, so that kinda explains it, but he does it to his whole dang yard. Anyone else I know with small dogs just dogs out a little path for them

@aral good point. I hadn't thought about the Twitter link on my website in years. Removed it just now. Thank you
