@futurebird @nev I've been calling these types of vehicles "bigass SUVs" and "bigass pickups" for years and I shake my head at the fact that they're no common. Another reason why they're common is that they fall under the "Light Truck" category in the CAFE standards instead of "Passenger Car" so they have less stringent standards on what they can emit. That and the car companies make more profit off of them than they do smaller cars.

@futurebird Illinois resident here. If this keeps up your mayors will be in running competition with our governors (present Illinois governor excluded; he hasn't been charged with any sort of corruption―yet).

@futurebird I would add in Satanic Panic and "Stranger Danger." The latter was and still is especially pernicious since a) it can lead to reluctance to with children unless one knows them and b) it completely ignores the fact that most harm to children comes from people who know them.

@futurebird In my adult life this plus "All gay men are pedophiles" are why I don't interact with children very much.

@futurebird I roll my eyes every time I get an email with the university news talking about research on roads that charge vehicles as they're going. So much wasted resources.

@futurebird If you really want to drive the point home during the 1 min you can play the sound of an alarm clock ticking at maximum volume.

@futurebird And you can wrap an ice pack in a towel and put it against yourself to keep yourself cool in the summer, saving energy on running a fan or air conditioner.

@netbsd "i386: reduce size of ISO image to fit on a CD-ROM again. "Thank you for this! I still have an ancient system that only takes CDs and not DVDs and thought it was ridiculous that the amd64 port could fit on a CD but the i386 port couldn't.

@stux Back when I lived in Pennsylvania I always found it amusing that I could buy a car from Bowser in the Pittsburgh area, then drive it up to Erie to attend Gannon (I know it's misspelled) University.

@stux Sadly, the U.S. government is going from "make rich people even richer" being its top priority to being its *only* priority.

@stux On behalf of all native Iowans who didn't want anyone like that in the Senate, I'm sorry.

@stux We went through that back in the 1990s with Ross Perot's Reform party. We don't need it again. If we do get a viable third party I want it to be one that builds itself from the ground up, starting with local and school board elections and working its way up to the state and then the federal level, done that way by true grassroots organizing. That's the kind of third party that would be both viable and serve people who aren't rich.

@art This was why I loved cycling after work when I worked nights while living in Dubuque, Iowa. Overnights were also quiet, and I kept that night schedule on my days off. The best part was that streets/roads/stroads that I never would bike on during the day I'd feel (relatively) safe biking during the overnight hours.

@stux @ente Seems like yet another bullshit AI parlor trick to me. The fact that they use Google AI for it is a no-go, IMO.

@art One of my lifelong regrets is not seeing Weird Al when he was playing at the Palace Theater in Greensburg, PA when I lived in PA.

@futurebird Not going to lie: this is why I'm glad I graduated high school the same year that the Columbine Massacre happened. Ever since it's been an excuse to make schools even more prison-like in the name of "security," and we all know how well that's working.I kind of want to ask my nephews about this now that 5 out of 6 of them have graduated from high school. I'm sure their experience differed from my own.

@futurebird Having purchased and still using a 70% mechanical keyboard with a (smaller) volume knob, I can say that I'd keep the knob but make it smaller. The one on my keyboard is the size of one key, and that's all I need. If I press mine it toggles the mute function.

@futurebird It is now. While everyone's been arguing about "culture war" issues, the cryptocurrency companies have been stashing cash into various politicians' pockets to get them to rewrite the laws in their favor. This is just the beginning. https://revealnews.org/podcast/crypto-ftx-sam-bankman-fried-trump-deregulation/

@jameshowell Working in the MAGFest computer museum, I can relate to this. There's a reason why we hold on to CRT monitors and floppy disks. While emulation can help in some cases it can't solve the problem of providing a program in the original context it was written in.

@futurebird I only voted for the last two, but I do have a caveat for Freyja: she was born in, and for the first 3 years of her life, raised in Pennsylvania, the Keystone State. I myself am originally from Iowa, the Hawkeye State. So I call her my "Keystone Kitty" and myself her "Hawkeye Human."
