@kevin I do regularly buy books from my local book shop which is amazingly just around the corner however they are very expensive and only carry a small range of books.

So Ive used various online products in the past to implement my ‘second brain’ and realised that I could never sustain it by giving part of my brain’s contents away to billionaires. Besides most of what I captured looked like garbage, and even billionaires don’t need/deserve to see that stuff. Going back to paper for that was a revelation and I realised that I wasn’t stupid, their systems were just making me feel that way.

Ive been working with and around computers for 35+ years and the promise of the system that will help you as a ‘second brain’ or ‘augment your human intellect’ is sadly a fantasy. I would dearly love it for me to finally stumble across such a system but unfortunately I have some grave misgivings about the effects of external computation devices on the brain.

It’s not that I think that computers, iPads, cloud based apps etc are intrinsically bad. Well, the people that design those things dont start off with the intention of being so. But what happens is that devices and apps and programs ‘bake in’ by default the values and philosophy of the society they are made in. And then that becomes that values and ethos of that system. Then you come along and use that system and have to abide by those rules.

If you were able to write your own software, you would be able to escape this trap. People like @neauoire are showing us the way in that regard. They are building systems that dont infantilise the person using it. They have taken a step back and started again using simpler tools. The systems made may be rudimentary by modern standards, but they do bake in a different ethos and that is refreshing.

I don’t have the ability (or time) to totally create my own tools. I have however taken a huge step back and have returned to _paper_ for my thinking and note taking. And over the last 8 months my ability to think clearer has slowly returned. I can talk about the content of books that Ive read, whereas before I would read a whole book and if asked what it was about would often be sketchy on the ideas being discussed.

What I found was that using tools - often well crafted and attractive tools - such as Obsidian or Notion or OneNote, the information would go in, but that didnt help me to process the information or understand it. Only by handwriting it, drawing diagrams, redrafting by hand, did it go in and stick. I also go sick of the artificial limitations imposed by each piece of software or app. You cant save this just in any folder for example it has to be in _this_folder or place…

And what Ive also realised is that over the years as systems have come and gone and computers and external disks died I have lost so much valuable information that I will never get back. Gone to digital heaven. Yet notebooks from 20-30 years ago are here and when I open them and look at a page something magic happens. Its like the context of what happened is there as well as the textual information. I remember what was happening at the time. It is much richer than just the text.

I’m not arguing that we should never use computers. They are valuable tools. What I am sort of arguing for is that you should be extremely cautious in giving over everything to modern apps created and run by billionaires or even by any group of people that you don’t share values with. They don’t have your best interests at heart. Also the physiological effects of systems like this are having dire effects on human brains.
