@omnipotens @G_Dog1985 my home feed has an odd delay. Toots from other instances seem to show up almost a day late, but they're ordered according to when I receive them. Toots from people on linuxrocks show up promptly. In the attached image a toot from Mastodon.social from 23 hours ago appears above a toot from linuxrocks.online from 10 minutes ago. I'm using Tusky and don't know where the issue lies.@malin @Linux_in_a_Bit is anyone else experiencing this?

@stux Should there be separate crimes for murder while acting as a state agent (while in uniform) versus murder on your spare time?

@stux they want people like Kanye and MTG because they draw users, especially if it's just to doom-scroll or yell at others. All these users bring them money.

I feel like all my toots are asking questions on how to use #Mastodon. For today's issue, does anyone know how to load a specific user's profile in the #Emacs Mastodon client? I can find their profile using 'S' but when I press 'P' on the name, handle or description I get a message that "Mastodon-tl-buffer-spec is not defined for buffer *mastodon-search-XXXXXXX*"I attached a screenshot of trying to find myself.

Someone mentioned #ICQ and now I'm trying to remember what my user number was back in 2006. I think it started with 636.Looks like the rest of my day is booked.

Hello people. I need a new #computer and would like advice.I mainly use my computer for browsing the web, watching videos, and small programming projects (my day job is as an embedded developer).I will only run #Linux and would rather not have to buy a Windows license.I mainly use my current laptop at my desk, attached to a keyboard, mouse and external monitor.I don't live in America. Electronics are expensive here - about 1.5x the price in the US. On the other hand, I often know people traveling from America who can bring things.I'm leaning towards building a simple desktop locally, possibly ordering extra RAM from America, and upgrading it as needed in the future.Does anyone have suggestions? I haven't physically put a computer together since around 2000. I hear #AMD is more future-proof than #Intel but don't know anything about specific part models

@OpenComputeDesign thanks for all that info.I figure I'd start with a more recent motherboard, that way it would be easier to upgrade the CPU and other parts in a few years. I don't need a dedicated GPU at this time though I'd like the possibility of adding one in the future, should my uses change.

@OpenComputeDesign looking just at RAM prices I see a big difference between DDR4 and 5. That alone might make it worth going with the older generation.

@OpenComputeDesign as I said, I haven't built a computer in a long time.Do case and power supply requirements change? If I got a computer now, can I assume that the housing will be enough for the next decade?

@OpenComputeDesign I think I found the parts to put together a good machine for me: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sy3XKpMy only concern is that the Ryzen 5 5600G I found doesn't include the fan.1. How important is a CPU fan? The case will be a standard tower that a coworker offered for free.2. Assuming I need a cooling solution, what would you suggest?

@OpenComputeDesign it's just a bare chip, without a heat sink either.I looked around a bit and ordered a Wraith cooler from AliExpress. I'm trying to save money and don't need to spend more on a cooling system than I spent on the motherboard. Thanks again

Many of us came to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse because of our belief in the importance of people instead of corporate and governmental control.I've seen lots of welcome guides warn that nothing on Mastodon is encrypted. It's usually emphasized that the admins can read your messages, but also means that all of your content can be subpoenaed.I think each instance should include a #WarrantCanary to note that they have not received such an order in the past.I'll start by tagging my instance admin: @omnipotens.h/t to @yair. I noticed @tooot.im has a canary in their about, which made me think that others should as well.

I often wonder how much my concerns over internet security hold me back from small enjoyments online. When I learned about Mastodon emojos my first thought was "This could be a fun way to share my niche interests."My second thought was "But if I show everyone that I'm into dragonflybsd :dragonflybsd: then anyone who knows a vulnerability in it will see I'm a target."

@nergal I also prefer tiny distros, but mainly because I like to find tools that match my way of working as closely as possible.I'm OK with revealing what distro I use in toots, but I don't want to make it part of my handle. Even here, I picked dragonflybsd because it's something I've never used.

Authors, I'm begging you. If you're going to be specific, make sure you actually know what you're talking about.I'm reading The Kaiju Preservation Society and can't get past this bit (apologies for my mistakes, I'm listening to the audiobook):'Tagok nodded, picked up the handgun, checked it, loaded it, disengaged the safeties. "This is a Glock 19," she said.'If you want to name-drop a gun here, don't pick one without a safety that you can disengage.

This is beyond the horribly unsafe idea of turning off the safety then putting the gun down. A couple sentences later she even hands the unsafe weapon to someone who has never touched a gun in his life and tells him to fire.
