I've been re-reading The Wicked Years tetralogy by Gregory Maguire, which I first read around 2012. If you're not familiar, it's a re-imagining of the Oz mythos which inspired that Wicked musical that I've never seen that then spawned that grotesque Hollyweird assault they call a movie.It's an excellent series of novels in my view, easily his best work. The author builds out a queasy magical realist playground through which he pursues an unrelenting exploration of pessimism; the series is heavy with themes of absurdism, psychosis, abandonment, the destruction of innocence and self-nullification. So you know, just the fun stuff.How about you?

I find there's a lot of emotionally difficult material lightly touched upon or encased in easily digestible prose, the change in style is a welcome relief after hammering myself with McCarthy for years. Maguire writes in a style that offers a kind of quiet encouragement to brush past the parts the reader doesn't really want to deal with, I think. The slower and more intentionally you read the darker things become.Then again, I'm generally hesitant to recommend fiction to anyone. People's literary palates are so varied, after all. In Watermelon Sugar was a revelation to me when I first read it and I still think about it all the time. Most people I've met that have read some Brautigan have been beyond negative about it. As time has passed I've become less convinced that they just don't like, get it man, and more inclined to believe that I just have acutely shit taste in literature. Lol.

@Lana Personally I found that the more I indulged the fascistic impulse, really refined the ontological fundamentals, the more my want for power was displaced by insularity and the ever growing yearning for a ruthless essentialism that made mundane political yammering completely insufferable. Power dynamics in the sickly contemporary sense is a quintessentially bourgeois concept and misses the point entirely. What the fascist wants is action. The elegant totality of a single, perfect shape. A mind honed against entropy and doubt. War for its own sake. Vitality over wealth. The extremes of sensory perception, a rejection of comfort. A life like a howling storm and a death faced unflinchingly. A fundamentally other kind of humanity. Liberation from the exact kind of compulsive self-soothing nonsense you're engaged in here. I don't expect you to actually understand any of it, I just replied because I felt like it. Alla prossima.
