I call on all #instance #admins to please keep a level head. Do NOT go overboard in the fight against #hatespeech or other issues!Don't attack your users for their opinions alone. If you're unclear what they mean or why they said something, take 10 seconds of your life to actually ask them.Remember there are people who simply don't care about those issues so much or take them as seriously. They are not obligated to care either: You aren't recruiting an army.

If we don't stop following the same old mindsets, we are not going to be using #Mastodon to build a new and better #internet for everyone. Quite contrarily, we seem to be on our way to making it worse than #Twitter #Birdsite with those behaviors.Let's take a stance against #Nazis and other issues, but do so calmly and rationally and while respecting other people. Otherwise we're only going to increase the problem while making life worse for everybody else.

@xenophora Currently I don't run my own instance, not sure if and when I will. If I did, my personal policy would likely be that any form harassment isn't welcome on it.I'm aware that some horrible people take advantage of places like #Gab to do bad things. Considering this, I can even understand people deciding to block them... although I wouldn't do it preemptively and first wait to see if they truly become a problem.

Was any information leaked by an insider that #Gab was intended to support #Nazis and for no other reason?From my knowledge so far, #Gab came to be as mass #censorship scandals on #Facebook and #Twitter #Birdsite started rising. Their only idea was to create a platform where people can express themselves freely to the extent allowed by the law.

@unlofl @xenophora I have an account on #Gab even if I don't use it. Out of curiosity I took a look just now. All I saw was standard news and people having polite discussion.Some good people I already know have #Gab accounts as well. Does that make them evil? How many folks who have done nothing wrong and likely oppose #hate as much as we do are using the platform, whom we're implicitly attacking as well? Am I the only one who asks those questions?

I wish to reiterate something I wish didn't need to be iterated: You are not a bad person because you use a specific #socialmedia platform, and have the right to register on any website on this planet! It does not matter if that site is called #Gab nor if it's called #Facebook #Twitter #Reddit or anything else.They are platforms used by a variety of different people. You are not joining a church. You don't need to justify which #online services you prefer nor should be attacked for it.

This comes after hell was unleashed earlier today, as #Gab released their own service in the network. Instances are threatening to block every #instance not found blocking Gab, some literally banning users who are seen talking positively of Gab anywhere public.Anyone with self awareness should be horrified at this display of blind crowd mentality. This has nothing to do with fighting #hate and #abuse any more: It's literally the world losing its mind and lashing in every direction.

I will not be afraid to merely speak about an #online service because of #social and #political sensitivities. Most of us come here to relax, to talk freely, to enjoy using this service. I did not come here to find myself randomly #banned or yelled at by social justice warriors, who think I have some duty to join whatever moral war is going on today.No: It being #Nazis doesn't make me care. I was literally #banned without any notice from a #Mastodon #instance I used on a daily basis, on which I knew and followed several people. All because I was seen making a comment toward another person, to and from entirely different instances, in which my only crime was to say that #Gab might help #internet #freedom overall.This is where we are: Afraid to say anything about anything, not knowing who we might offend and when. Would I be wrong to call all this a #morality epidemic?

@C_Chell This is exactly what I'm saying! Thank you: You're an example of how I wish all admins were like, balanced and fair and rational. So much damage could be avoided if people just stopped to think before acting.So far, there's still debate as to whether the instance even launched yet. After yesterday I thought it did, but some are saying it doesn't even exist at the moment. People are literally freaking out over a prediction, there's probably nothing there at this moment.

@C_Chell But yes: Right now nobody knows how this will even turn out. All reactions are based strictly on an association that #Gab = #Nazis created by the fact that they let everyone express themselves equally without taking sides.Maybe most people there will behave and we can just block the rotten apples. If not then yeah, we can start blocking the instance if it's indeed harming other users. Individual users can themselves block instances, so if it's not extreme this can be left up to them.

@Gargron This is why I love #GPL in general. Many people complain that it's too restrictive... in some senses that may be the case, which makes this ironic coming from an anti-restriction fanatic as myself. I love the idea that you can do whatever you want with it, but it has to be #opensource no matter what... meaning you're guaranteed to give back to the community just as you should.

@Gargron I think so. There are instances and people threatening other instances and people to block it. Dealt with some experiences after which I'm almost afraid to even discuss the subject. But it seems to have exploded sometime last night, so I take it that's when they brought it online.

@james I'm sorry if I may be overreacting a bit: I was banned from someone's instance yesterday after being seen taking about the #Gab platform, across other instances and with unrelated people. It came as a shock especially since I even knew the admin a bit.Figured I'd mention this as a word of warning for everyone: Some admins will ban everyone seen having calm discussion about Gab without attacking it... they take that as you siding with harmful people. It baffles me but that's a thing.
