@clacke In the UK the cheapest practical electric car is the Dacia Spring at about £15000 - a cheaper BYD car is in the pipeline. There are cheaper electric cars but they tend to be speed limited, and/or two seater. The cheapest ICE car in the UK isn't much cheaper! It's the Dacia Sandrero at about £14500.

I'm as sure as I can be that I've had a phishing attempt from two hotels that I've booked for my Slovakia trip in September. Both hotels are in the same group. Identical emails but also identical messages within the booking.com messaging system. They want me to reconfirm my credit card details - hmmmm!I've emailed the hotels directly and also messaged booking.comMaybe this is yet another argument for booking direct with the hotels rather than using a booking agent.#phishing #PhishingScam #bookingcom #bookingdotcom #hotels

@futurebirdIt's not enough to provide training, or to ensure that these trades provide a living income - society needs to show that these tradespeople are valued and respected.Too often repairers, tradespeople, and craft-Persons are seen as second class to 'white collar' workers.

It is increasingly obvious that #vivaldi is the least evil of the browsers - at least for Android mobile. Firefox is heading down the AI enshitification route. Chrome lost its way a while ago.DuckDuckGo I'm unsure about.

@ChrisMayLA6 While I'd love cheaper fares, more services and better infrastructure - I'm not convinced - as an occasional user of European trains - that British railways are as bad or as expensive as we make out.Certainly if you rock up to the station today and expect to go to the seaside NOW you will be paying a LOT of money, but plan ahead (& buy a railcard) and there are a lot of affordable tickets to choose from.We don't suffer from Germany's creaking infrastructure leading to huge delays and cancellations, or French mad timetables, bonkers luggage rules or surly staff.Ticketing in Britain is over-complicated and desperately needs reform, but headline prices are misleading.

I've just leared about the artist Martha Rosler who created a series of photo-montages called 'Brining the War Home' where she juxtaposes the Ameican 'good life' of the 1970s (and later versions into the 2000s) with images from warfare. They show how we just accept war on our screens without paying attention to the horrors or war.Interestingly these artworks were not initially displayed in galleries or museums but distributed to anti-war protest groups without commentary. Is it an approach that could be adapted to the genocide in Gaza? This is a very wordy analysis - but it contains the most images I could find in a single webpage : https://catalystjournal.org/index.php/catalyst/article/view/39401/31307#modernArt #Art #MastoArt

@futurebirdThere's something similar happening in London, England - they are trying to close the centuries old Billingsgate and Smithfields fish and meat wholesale markers. These are the last survivors of the old London that built itself on trade in physical stuff rather than the nebulous money markets. The money men (and it will be men) believe there's money to be made in the land value rather than the heritage of a country.

@mpmilestogo Thanks for the Artemis link - that looks very interesting. The tracking thing is also relevant - in the cycling world theres been a bit of a pushback against apps like Strava which monitor performance and have pseudo-competetive features as some riders have come to realise that this detracts from the quality of the ride (getting into nature, seeing places, meeting people). I can relate to that.

@nobodyI had this recently with Slovakia - the train was in the planner, but I couldn't make an advance reservation because they were 'unavailable' - I had to go to the Regiojet website to book.Reservation requirements are killing Interrail (and maybe that's what some companies /countries want?)

Back from an exhausting allotment session.Nice chat with our Romanian neighbour - she's given us some tomatoes, peppers and pickling cucumbers in exchange for some of our apples.Apart from them we've come home with the last of the potatoes, apples, pears and a few raspberries and strawberries.I've roughly dug the potato bed ready for some green manure sowing. There's still a lot to do there.#allotment #leicestershire
