@testing @ada @fediversenews Actually I never tried. I know ActivityPub supports that, and I can do it in the iOS Mastodon apps, including Mona which I use for Friendica. Or at least the button is there. I don’t see how else moderating a post could work. I’ve had a look at this https://wiki.friendi.ca/docs/forums and am more confused as it says you can restrict visibility of a post to the group, but it will somehow be visible to others on the forum’s wall.

@testing @ada @fediversenews This only applies if the post is the one that starts a thread (so not the comments that hang off it, which is not obvious or visible really to non-Friendica users), but I’m not clear if that only works for all Friendica users. How can the forum change the visibility of a private post so other members of the group can see it?

@jupiter_rowland I’m trying to square the behaviour described in these two sections with my model of how public/private posts work in ActivityPub. They seem to suggest that if you create a private message that’s only visible to the forum, the forum is somehow able to boost that post and make it now visible to other members of the group, perhaps only as the start of a new comment thread. Is this something that only works over DFRN and not AP? @fediversenews

@jupiter_rowland I just tried two test posts to the forum. A private one from Mastodon and a private post from Friendica. The Mastodon one has just disppeared. It does not show that it has been boosted, which normally happens when I post to the group. The Friendica one is a little more puzzling. It says “Fediverse News reshared this”, but I can’t see the post at all in the forum. I’m starting to doubt the documentation matches the actual behaviour.

@mathias @jupiter_rowland “Unlisted” posts are a lot less useful than I initially thought. In fact I can’t see any real use for them at all. They don’t do what I naïvely thought they did. They still appear on your timeline and the timeline of everyone that follows you. They just don’t appear on the Local and Federated timelines, but as they are just impossible to use on larger instances anyway I doubt anyone would notice.

@mathias @jupiter_rowland I keep seeing the suggestion that you should use them for long threads. Post the first as Public, make the continuation posts Unlisted so as not to bother followers who aren’t interested. Except that’s not true at all. They don’t work like that. Your followers will still see all the posts in the thread.

@LucyWildboots @jo @jupiter_rowland There are strong feelings on both sides of this, which is going to result in emotive language. I’ve definitely seen celebrities dunking on small accounts and driving them off Twitter. But also, I use QT myself - mostly to add context or to refer back to my own previous posts.

@LucyWildboots @jo @jupiter_rowland My confirmation bias means I believe all the studies saying it’s not the tool that causes harassment, as people intent on harassing will use any method available, including simple replies, to cause harm. The fix is cultural, not technical, although speed bumps and guide rails probably help to nudge behaviour away from unwanted and towards more positive community behaviour. Maybe.

@ahriboy @atomicpoet @DarcMoughty @fediversenews @igrok Where is this? Here (UK) I get 5G pretty much everywhere, except out in the countryside where it will drop to 4G. When I’ve measured the speed it’s usually faster than my home fibre connection. And there’s no such thing as a 4G plan. Everyone gets 5G as standard (if your phone is capable).I’m paying £15 a month for unlimited calls/texts, 30GB data 5G, better deals exist.

@spreadmastodon @fediversenews I’m seeing more and more posts about the rapid growth of dot social (about 4000 a day according to @mastodon_daily_active_users )I’m more convinced that what’s needed is a crèche instance for people who don’t want to choose. A highly moderated, deliberately short term home with maybe mentoring or guidance to follow people and find a long term home. @spreadmastodon @fediversenews @mastodon_daily_active_users Does anyone have useful stats on how many join the big instances and find them too noisy and give up? The Local timeline on a big instance is functionally useless. You’re not going to stumble across people who match your interests without work.

@Anthro @spreadmastodon @fediversenews @mastodon_daily_active_users @universeodon It’s one of the bigger ones about 70k users. The one I’m on is 160k, but mastodon.social is over 1 million. You can check on https://instances.social and search for different kinds of instance. There’s a really long tail of small ones and a relatively small number of huge ones.

@mike @Anthro @spreadmastodon @fediversenews @mastodon_daily_active_users @universeodon There are lots of downsides to big instances. Noise, moderation scaling, lack of community feeling etc. Availability or resilience is a different issue altogether. In one sense adding more instances just adds more points of failure. A 10 person instance going down doesn’t affect many people. Even mastodon.social

@mike @Anthro @spreadmastodon @fediversenews @mastodon_daily_active_users @universeodon would only affect less than 9% of Mastodon and even less of the Fediverse as a whole. But for those 10 people (or 1 million) it’s a very big deal. And their followers. In theory larger instances have the infrastructure, capacity and manpower to run a more reliable server.

@lauren I had a conversation* yesterday about this. I think Bluesky calling their content labelling and muting scheme “moderation” is a bad faith, disingenuous and deliberately obfuscatory move. There is no commitment to remove harmful content or bad actors, just a wish that someday you’ll be able to choose to ignore it. https://mas.to/@MetalSamurai/110265172885133105 * I may have spoken at length

@dave None of the claimed reasons stand up to scrutiny. Allegedly they can’t use AcivityPub because real account portability is paramount. And yet, there is only one node (not even a second for testing or proof of concept), their Distributed ID system is just a placeholder implementation (that likely doesn’t actually work, hence one node), but the “real” DID system will probably be revealed as reskinned NFTs.

@maegul @atomicpoet I’ve got accounts on Mastodon, Akkoma, CalcKey, Friendica (and a couple of WriteFreely instances). I almost entirely use mobile (iOS), so a good app experience makes the biggest difference to me. So far Mastodon/Ice Cubes wins. Fast, slick, power efficient (I used to use Metatext and that drained my battery quickly). I’m missing long posts and emoji reactions. CalcKey/Kimis is close. Give me post editing and updated Kimis and I might switch.

@maegul @atomicpoet The Friendica/Relatica combination is disappointing so far. I like the Facebook style handling of groups and conversation threading, but they’re both so slow. Relatica is a Flutter app, and cross platform apps always seem to end up slow, inefficient and weird feeling.Akkoma doesn’t really have a good mobile app. Mona works, but doesn’t support emoji reactions. So far it’s my last choice.

@jupiter_rowland I know, I use Friendica as well. Just pointing out that it looks strange to Mastodon users. I see Groups is listed on the Mastodon roadmap as MAS-15 and “in progress”. Maybe the new native groups support will help and it will be displayed in a way that makes it clearer.

@FinchHaven @jupiter_rowland @fediversenews @FinchHaven But more than half of those Mastodon users appeared in the last 6 months and was pretty small for a long time before that. Friendica may be lesser known and quieter, but it’s the place to be if you prefer a Facebook style interface, or need to keep in touch with people on diaspora* (an even more insular community).
