“Dr. Hinton said he has quit his job at Google, where he has worked for more than decade and became one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of #AI. A part of him, he said, now regrets his life’s work.”https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/01/technology/ai-google-chatbot-engineer-quits-hinton.html

@EU_Commission surprising that Belgium is the only member state to appear twice, with both its official languages 😅

@ainali @webmink For the discussion at hand, I see the following relevant updates:• Zoom Privacy Policy was updated on 11th of August with very explicit wording that they are **not** using user data for AI training.https://github.com/OpenTermsArchive/contrib-versions/commit/f1377c8f108fe08c1b522981a089cdaf9f69bb9a#TermsSpotting

@ainali @webmink • Associated updates to Zoom Terms of Service on 11th of August, replacing the “we use data for AI but actually we don’t” with a proper rewording, properly announced and labeled as such.https://github.com/OpenTermsArchive/contrib-versions/commit/8f84845214e914183752a2ac59773e9ae764932e#TermsSpotting

@ainali @webmink • The previous quick update on 7th of August, that had added the “but actually we don‘t” part: https://github.com/OpenTermsArchive/contrib-versions/commit/eaf6449424ae12e9f5b51c9ecec847e283fc3b3b#TermsSpotting

@simon I’ve seen this sort of consultation unfold in European governments. Interns or low level staff were used to classify comments into buckets, which were summarized by more senior staff and quantified.

@simon Another, much larger example, could be France’s “Grand débat national”, where automated summarization and classification was used. The French Parliament even hosted a dedicated hackathon: https://www2.assemblee-nationale.fr/15/evenements/2019/restitution-d-analyses-des-donnees-du-grand-debat-national/un-hackathon-inedit

“#BigTech companies calling for government help is to me like a circle of anonymous alcoholics, ‘I need help because I can't stop myself’. These are the big companies getting hundreds of millions of dollars from the capital market, and who now go to governments telling ‘we don't know what we're doing’. This cannot be. With big power comes big responsibility to society.” — Roberto Viola, DGCNECT at #NGIForum23 @EC_NGILivestream: https://ngiforum2023.eu/live-streaming/plenaries-sessions-15-11/#DSA #AIAct

“We ought to support #DigitalCommons for three reasons:1. Political: they are mandatory for democratic participation, and their very existence demonstrates the validity of cooperation and large-scale contribution.2. Economical: they serve innovators and companies, enable economies of scale by mutualisation of resources, and protect innovators against vendor lock-in and rogue intermediaries.” —@HenriVerdier @ambnum#NGIForum23

“3. Geopolitical: the idea that we can cooperate in a shared responsibility is a very European view. The US does not care, China is against it, Africa is focused on connectivity first. So, we have to fight for this idea, not as a third way but as a first way rooted in European history and the history of the web. It is essential for its #sovereignty.” — @HenriVerdier @ambnum #NGIForum23

“We call on the European Commission to propose a binding legal ban on conversion practices targeting #LGBTQ+ citizens in the #EU”. A European Citizen Initiative (ECI) is not a petition, it is a legally binding instrument.https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/There are 6 weeks left to reach the thresholds for this one. Berlin, Hamburg, where are you??

The sort of blackmail the lack of #DigitalSovereignty exposes all of us to: “The applicant may be forced to effectively shut down #Facebook and #Instagram in #Nigeria in order to mitigate the risk of enforcement measures”.https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckgrwxp5r15oAlso confirmation of the necessity of 🇪🇺: Meta called “unrealistic” to “seek prior approval before transferring any personal data out of Nigeria”, whereas a fine of 4% of global revenue makes it suddenly realistic.

@picofarad I see it more as a threat targeting businesses and the informal economy that is strong in subsaharan Africa. As a side note, I see what you mean, but I personally wouldn’t call actual popular frustration at the potential loss of a service “astroturfed” 🙂

🥳 It's a beautiful announcement to celebrate: Meta is ending political advertisement in 🇪🇺 in October 2025!!https://about.fb.com/news/2025/07/ending-political-electoral-and-social-issue-advertising-in-the-eu/These were already illegal in several #EU countries, and my team had found many illegal ones in 🇫🇷 back in 2019. Many ads were paid for by foreign actors. Micro-targeting within social media for political influence will still be abused, but that is a victory against #FIMI and for electoral integrity.

The pathetic, bitter wording of the wording that blames an EU regulation for being “left with an impossible choice” (ooh poor Meta and its $1.8 trillion market cap 😢) is just another demonstration that yes, #regulation does work and that once a business activity’s negative externalities on society are factored in the costs, some might become economically unsustainable. And from a European perspective, that's just a good thing 👌I'm happy to leave it to others to let money buy political outcomes.
