@TonyStark Your state representative/delegate/assemblyperson and your town/city/county council representative represent a few thousand people. Your US House member represents 700k and your Senator could have up to 39M constituents. It's much easier to get to know state and local people. Unless you live in Delaware. Then you probably know Joe Biden.

@TonyStark I thought we were going to learn from Brexit and not fuck up in 2016. Then we didn't even learn from what we did in 2016.

@TonyStark I don't ever want to hear an elected or campaigning Republican say again that mental health rather than guns is the reason why there was a school shooting. (Pointing out once again that people with mental health issues are much more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators of it.)

@TonyStark I thought Rubio was going to be the lone voice of relative moderation in this administration of sycophants. No Democrat liked Rex Tillerson but we appreciated that we saw Trump for who he was. We respected John Kelly for keeping Trump from doing some of the truly heinous things he wanted to do (though not all of them, obviously, and were horrified about how he spoke to Kelly about Kelly's son who died in combat. Rubio is a full-throated MAGA fascist now too.

@MJ Happy Black History Month! Everyone, regardless of your ethnic background, should celebrate the achievements of Black people who have to do more to be recognized. There are all kinds of cool events everywhere this month. I'm going to one tomorrow. This is just a short list in a few cities. You'll probably have to search for your own since I ran out of space. https://www.washingtonian.com/2024/01/25/ways-to-celebrate-black-history-month-in-the-dc-area/https://billypenn.com/2025/01/30/family-friendly-and-children-oriented-black-history-month-events/https://secretnyc.co/museum-exhibits-black-history-month/https://chicagodefender.com/your-guide-to-chicagos-black-history-month-events-exhibits-and-celebrations/https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/black-history-month-events-pittsburgh/

I know there are other Gen Xers who listened to old school R.E.M. (on cassette!) as teenagers who will want this. I’m not surprised at all that R.E.M. is helping keep Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty going. It’s one more of the important programs the Trump admin hasn’t sent its Congress-approved funds. It’s not surprising that a wannabe oppressive regime doesn’t want to send messages about freedom to people in oppressive countries.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_rshoUeixk&t=189s https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/r-e-m-reelease-radio-free-europe-single-1235330404/

Trump voters are struggling to say that they have regrets even as the administration directly hurts them, but these from Emmitsburg, Maryland and other towns nearby are getting closer. Local pub employees may not have jobs this summer because firefighters aren't coming to town for training at the National Fire Academy now. It's hurting all of us, not just the town where the academy is. How many fires would less destructive or deadly with better-trained firefighters?https://www.npr.org/2025/05/05/nx-s1-5351764/trump-cuts-national-fire-academy-maryland-emmitsburg-fema-federal-spending

A little malicious compliance in Salt Lake City. Here's one way to sidestep a law that forbids Pride and Juneteenth flags.https://www.ksl.com/article/51308163/salt-lake-city-adopts-3-new-flags-to-bypass-new-state-flag-law

@TonyStark Zero relevance to the Harris campaign. Should we show off the poems we memorized in high school now? I still have one of Shakespeare's sonnets and one I picked for AP French. Can't remember what I went into the next room for, but poems I learned decades ago are still rattling around in my head.

@TonyStark I’ve been sick since I saw it at midnight. The shooter didn’t care which Jews he killed. He just wanted to kill Israel-supporting Jews to send a “free Palestine” message to all of us. The very definition of terrorism. Also, if he was just going by appearances, he killed a couple of Zillennials. Younger Jews are more likely to be sympathetic than Boomers or Gen X.

If Republicans in Congress spend their time on ridiculous messaging bills like renaming WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority clearly explains its purpose) WMAGA, it's better than coming up with harmfull bills. We'd never call it the Trump Train with anything but derision even if they changed the iconic M to a T. It would just look like Boston's logo. We'd call it Metro anyway. These are unserious people who would rename the country MAGA if they could.https://www.independent.co.uk/politics/trump-train-dc-metro-name-change-b2760781.html

@ignova @TonyStark I hope the friends I lost because they couldn't bear to vote for Biden (we didn't make it to the switch to Harris) because he was too pro-Israel after 10/7 are satisfied. Though they've probably convinced themselves, 18 hours later, than Harris would have done the same anyway, and not voting was justified.

The man who fills his days with "executive time" (watching right-wing TV) and took as many vacation days in 4 years as Obama took in 8, thinks Americans should have even fewer days off of work than now.Trump is on the wrong side of everything. Holidays are good for the economy He's probably just bitter that Biden signed the law recognizing Juneteeth as a federal holiday. Black Americans deserve to celebrate emancipation. Plus most Americans need more paid time off.https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/20/economy/trump-too-many-holidays-economy

There's a lot of bad spin about Democrats "killing" the resolution to impeach Trump. Republicans are the majority party. The last paragraph of the article itself, in a once-reliable publication, says that Democrats aren't able to impeach, all while the author forgets that Democrats held the majority when the House impeached before. Republicans from the other two branches let Trump do whatever he wants for five months and the media blames Democrats for not stopping him.https://newrepublic.com/post/197173/democrats-kill-resolution-impeach-trump

Thom Tillis can't take the MAGA party anymore and won't be running for re-election. North Carolina has a Democratic governor, 2 Republican senators, and had a 7/7 split in its House delegation before the state legislature gerrymandered it to be 10-4 R in early redistricting. 2026 will be an uphill battle for Democrats to flip the Senate, but this particular seat just got easier with no incumbent. Tillis also has more freedom to vote his conscience for the next 18 months.https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/gop-sen-thom-tillis-not-running-re-election-north-carolina-rcna215819

@TonyStark 72 days. Democrats had a fillibuster-proof majority for 72 days from July 7, 2009 when Al Franken was sworn in, interrupted for a month between Ted Kennedy's death and the swearing-in of appointed Sen. Paul Kirk, until Republican Scott Brown was sworn in on February 4, 2010. This was actually 24 working days. Democrats had the chance to pass one piece of legislation: the Affordable Care Act.

@TonyStark As far as simple majorities in the House and Senate with a Democratic president, that has happened twice this century: 2009-2011 with Obama, and 2021-2023 with Biden. Not coincidentally, these are the two times this century we've seen progress in health care, green energy, job growth and infrastructure.
