@unl0ckd I don't think it is. I have this simple setup where I acquire a machine/vm, install my user and setup SSH key/python and then use Ansible to copy over and set things up as I wish. It takes me about an hour to install my dev machine from scratch.Previously I had a text file with ~70 steps, the packages and settings I wanted (e.g. i3, emacs installed, theme setup, fonts). I just chose to automate most of the steps since they can be done easily with e.g. Ansible.

@like50bears @alexbuzzbee I agree in that tools (i.e. applications) should definitely interoperate and not hold the user hostage. The user experience transcends individual applications. Or at least it should be able to. Like in Unix philosophy we prefer tiny utils that are composable. As far as what is an appropriate "little part", well it depends.

@like50bears @alexbuzzbee Branding and calling the use of something an experience is often in conflict with efficiency. The tool should fade away and the application of it to be in focus. I.e., if I'm making a wooden box, I want the hammer to just do its job of nailing something for me. Time and time again. I am working on achieving a goal. I can be delighted by a great hammer but it should not try to do too many things or have too many frills. I'll buy more from the brand that works well.

@alexbuzzbee maybe you don't mean it yourself but my industry experience tends to say people have apps be silos and designers design for users to stay inside the silo. They want even a distinctive memorable and delightful experience but it's far from whole system optimal. Unfortunately so in my experience. I think the labeling was nomen est omen.

@kev I left Spotify after over 10 years of paying for them. I chose not to buy from the others so far, because I don't know if they are much better, but we'll see. It is important to take a stance on moral matters. Funding JRE is irresponsible and the warning is just lip service. We know what sort of people the Spotify leadership is and such people don't need any more money.

@pyre35 @kev A lot of problems we have in the world are due to people just calculating and acting upon a short term profit for themselves. I will just take my money elsewhere.

@danct12 Looks so cute! After looking closely, I have to say the keyboard is very non-standard.

Unistalled Brave today, full of BATshit coin advertisements. Privacy focus, allocating advertisement money better were nice, but can't accept coin scams.

@blackmore These are just recent screenshots from my phone notifications. On the desktop they show up as notifications too. The "startup screen" also shows slightly fanciers ads of the same kind.

@ralismark seems to me like #screenshotsaturday is for game developers to showcase their work, and #screenshotsunday is for showing your desktop/wm setup. I guess I should really start doing both.

One of today's privileges for me, to eat food grown by oneself for enjoyment, not subsistence. (not to mention a summer house with a yard, five weeks of paid summer vacation, healthy and able, ...) A good learning experience, as well as a gratitude reminder. #privilege #gardening #greentech

Decided to try @protonmail today just to see if it's viable. Doesn't look good for a start. For a supposedly #privacy oriented #email, they have gamified onboarding with this nonsense. Get twice the space iff you hand over all your contacts, emails and install their app to spy on your phone? They could be benign, but this is like bad optics, if you ask me. Huh?

I was reading the #freesoftware definition and it's curiously licensed CC4 Attribution *NoDerivatives*. If software should be free as in freedom, and even its manuals must be free, then why is this text so nonfree?https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

Another question that came to my mind is that if manuals must be free, as other kinds of works of practical use too, then how can training material be nonfree, or are all people who arrange commercial courses about #freesoftware and don't publish their materials / videos wrong?

@worldsendless Can you elaborate on what kind of breakage do you see? It hasn't felt like much honestly. Maybe I just don't use many features. When I compare to the other side of the fence, the JS stuff rots faster than I can fix it.

@worldsendless I guess I've had this problem a few times as well. I think the CIDER auto-injection of the dependencies has helped a bit. Maybe I also don't upgrade the deps that often (Emacs, CIDER or project deps that is)I think updating deps has always been simple as long as there exist new versions to upgrade to.I was thinking that did some config or code change a lot for you. The versioning hell I don't worry about. I think for me the most breaking upgrades were CI or build tool changes.
