Today, I was quite impressed by a venerable open source project, written entirely in C, built and configured by a single make file, that has been ported to many decent systems. No Cmake, no autotools, no need to have a huge docker based build tool chain. No bazillion dependencies that are strewn, rotting, across many disparate repositories.

What #HamRadio projects/sites/services/apps would you really like to see/use? What’s missing? I’m thinking of putting my current project on hold; I’m losing my original motivation in it… and am wondering what might be useful to develop? Tell me of your needs/wishes. Must be developed as open source/community. Please boost for awareness.

West Kent Amateur Radio Society will be hosting GB2NW, as part of Mills On The Air again this year, 13th/14th May, operating SSB, CW and FT8 on HF, and SSB/FM on VHF. We’re operating from Nutley Windmill, on the Ashdown Forest, East Sussex. The locator is JO01AB and WAB TQ42. This is one of only five Open Trestle Post Mills still in existence in the UK, and is itself in full working order. #HamRadio #MillsOnTheAir #NationalMillsWeekend

Working on my #SHTF equipment - I have a proper RS232C port! And a CD-ROM and 1.44 Floppy drive! Hard disk still works; not sure if I could get a replacement or some kind of SSD. Plus I installed the last decent version of Windows! And Firefox v12. The legendary ThinkPad keyboard is incredible :) #RetroComputing #Prepper

@thelastpsion wow, that’s a massive list! I found I had to radically downsize; I’m still overwhelmed. A problem is getting side-tracked: eg I have a test program that uses an existing Rust FFT library to transform an audio waveform into its constituent frequencies, but I MUST UNDERSTAND THE MATHS BEHIND IT! This (and everything I’m interested in) has fractal complexity. I wonder if there’s a role for an open source “manager”, who helps engineers prioritise?

@thelastpsion “interesting enough”? Well you’ve got the world’s finest PDA OS running in emulation on Haiku, and a plan to modernise the development tool chain. Could it be more interesting?! :) Glad you had a great weekend.

Has anyone got a solution to getting dual-boot Windows 10/Linux Mint working consistently on an EFI system? Two SSDs, 1 with Win10; 2 is blank. Both GPT partition tables. Install Mint alongside Windows Boot Manager, and all on sdb (the blank). Installs OK, reboot to GRUB menu, can boot Mint. Reboot, choose Windows Boot Manager, it boots. Reboot and GRUB is gone. Looks like modern Win10 forcibly “repairs” its boot to remove Linux.

@thelastpsion yes. Trying to install it in legacy mode now, it’s really frustrating. Shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to get this working - first system I’ve had that has difficulty. Oddly, I managed it on here with a pair of hard disks, now I’m rebuilding it with SSDs. *hate computers*

@thelastpsion afraid not, but I believe XP can no longer be registered (if that’s something you need; can’t recall whether this can be circumvented)

@thelastpsion sorry didn’t see question until now - Jekyll as it’s what GitHub pages uses (no other reason - if I recall it was a pain to set up locally to test with)

@thelastpsion I’ve been making a start on a C compiler https://github.com/devzendo/retro-c-compiler - just about to start the lexer so I’m some way off emitting assembler, but I’ll need to make it work against SIBO-friendly asm… which assembler would work?

@BrodieOnLinux @europlus I thought this must be a sh!tpost but looked it up on their own site, and it’s true. Way to tank your career as an author, Addy Osmani. O’Reilly have fallen so far; so sad. We’ll be tidying up after GenAI for years - perhaps I should market myself as a Legacy / GenAI Code Fixer?

@futurebird nice idea! I’ll go for Ad-Free Buddhism. Ads lead to craving, which leads to attachment, which continues the cycle of Samsara; an endless realm of suffering. An interesting framing, ads being against my religion. Not that I see it as a religion, but as you say, people don’t question my choice if framed that way!
