@stux I think this is precisely what’s missing in the Fediverse ecosystem, serious tools for organisations. You can’t expect them to code their own or use some mobile app. And without those tools you can’t complain that governments etc. are on Twitter or FB but not the Fediverse.

@clacke @aryak Here in the UK it’s one of my pet peeves that non-US, non-UK companies think that they need to show MM-DD-YYYY to us because we also speak English. As if MM-DD-YYYY is the international way. When, in fact, it’s probably the least international of all.

@stux @wagesj45 I have started to think we mainly have ourselves to blame for most printer issues. More expensive office printers seem to have far fewer problems in my experience. Think: one issue per 1000 pages printed instead of one issue per 10 pages. We should either not expect miracles from printers that cost 200 bucks or should acknowledge that we find printing important and, accordingly, invest in a good one.

@alsternerd Did you know that the euro notes have ordinal sizes to help blind people establish which is which?

Over 4 billion people use the Web. Fewer than 10 million people use the Fediverse. If you're a developer and wish to make the Fediverse more popular, building Fedi tools for users already in the Fediverse will barely change that number. Building Web services that just happen to have Fediverse integration will make for a massive change.#ActivityPub #Fediverse #Developer #FLOSS #IndieWeb #Mastodon #PixelFed1/3

Most people don't care about underlying tech or protocols so don't overly promote Fediverse integration as a major selling point.Wordpress doesn't shout from the rooftops that it outputs Atom feeds by default. Yet, thanks to this, over 400 million websites now push out Atom feeds for aggregators and feed readers to pick up.GitHub and StackExchange don't make a big song and dance about their Atom integration either because most of their users won't care. It just happens.2/3

So, build a CMS/forum/blogging/podcast/sharing/monitoring/automation tool that just happens to have Fediverse integration. Don't put Fedi integration in the top three selling points or features as most people won't care.Or, look for existing projects that already integrate with Twitter/RSS/Atom and see if you can help add Fedi integration. If this quiet proliferation of Fediverse integration makes 1% of Web users find their way to the Fediverse that makes for 40 million new users.3/3

@thenewoil Should that not read “Facebook faces Europe blackout”?Meta losing access to half a billion of the world’s richest people will have a material effect on their bottom line.Even losing access for a few weeks could have a major effect. Users are fickle and we’ve seen giants such as MySpace effectively lose their business to a competitor within months.Just a half day WhatsApp outage caused some of my friend groups to permanently move to Signal.#Facebook #Europe #EU

This is a good piece about how social networks based platforms such as #Facebook and #Twitter (who are hard to beat because of the network effect) can be challenged by new platforms such as #TikTok that don't rely on existing networks at all.I feel there are a couple of lessons for the #Fediverse in there.https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/tiktok-and-the-fall-of-the-social-media-giants

@feditips @dev Does this lend itself to going slightly beyond microblogging? Perhaps 700 words and two or three images per post but not much more.

@tag @torgo @appforce1 I would go for Firefox with at least the uBlockOrigin and Consent-o-Matic plugins.

@tchambers @wjmaggos @kraft I have wondered if there’s a way that Wordpress could do with ActivityPub what is also does with RSS and Atom: by default exposing every new post in a feed.If the title of every new post was made available as a ‘Status’ in AP then people with Fediverse accounts could follow any website that uses WP.You couldn’t ‘talk back’ to the site but you would be alerted whenever there’s something new to read.

@blacklight A few years ago there was uproar because of trackers capturing BT beacons were installed in all sorts of things, from public bins to shops, to track people (shops could detect recurring visits for instance).IIRC Apple responded by randomising the MAC address of its devices. Presumably your wife’s MacBook has a new BT MAC every 24 hours or so and those are accumulating in your logs.

Question. If a media organisation wants to host a single-user (or perhaps a handful of own users, one per topic) instance mainly to publish to the #Fediverse (mostly #Mastodon and #Pixelfed in practice), what is then the best server software?A full Mastodon server might be a bit overkill, is #Akkoma or #Pleroma a lighter solution for this particular use case? The server would have to make posts that are both fully Mastodon and Pixelfed compatible (so include CW’s, image alt texts etc.)Tips?

@1br0wn @fj I wonder if Messaging Layer Security could be integrated into #Mastodon to replace its current (unencrypted) DM system. If #Matrix does indeed move to #MLS too there would be interesting opportunities for communication between Mastodon and Matrix clients.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messaging_Layer_Security

@mazigazi @mf_newsdigest This not about what to use as a search engine, there are indeed alternatives for Google Search such as Ecosia, or DuckDuckGo or Qwant. This is about Google who used to sponsor FullFact but now has stopped doing so.Unless Ecosia, or Qwant, or DuckDuckGo now send a million per year Fullfact’s way then this is a loss for most people.#FullFact #FactChecking
