@stux I like Vivaldi a lot; it's built on the Chromium engine, so I get extensions from the Chrome web store. Opera also seemed pretty good — used it a while, but switched to Vivaldi, which I like better. One nice thing: If a site insists that I allow ads, I can allow ads and still block trackers.https://vivaldi.net

@clive I was struck by how this lengthy NY Times article on a housing development in Brooklyn, located near the short about 20 feet above current sea level, never even alludes to the ongoing increase in sea level.

I just looked into Lemmy — this was helpful: https://join-lemmy.org and also: https://join-lemmy.org/instances — and then a few communities, and immediately came across this:America is One of the Few Cultures with Insults for Smart People - https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/05/03/america-is-one-of-the-few-cultures-with-insults-for-smart-people/#lemmy

@Wolven I recall a phrase used by a poker buddy when he won a big pot with a straight in five-card stud. As he pulled the chips toward him, he said, "A simple case of skill and coordination winning over ignorance and superstition." 🙂

@brosandprose That picture reminds me strongly of the Charlie Manson photos taken around the time of his trial.

@clive I don't even recall Clark Kent working on a story. I get the idea that he was a reporter so he could walk around town during the day rather than having to sit in an office or bullpen.

What Went Wrong with a Highly Publicized COVID Mask Analysis?Naomi Oreskes has a somewhat grim article in the Scientific American. It begins: The COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, but in May officials ended its designation as a public health emergency. So it's now fair to ask if all our efforts to slow the spread of the disease—from masking, to hand washing, to working from home—were worth it. One group of scientists has seriously muddied the waters with a report that…http://leisureguy.ca/2023/10/21/covid-mask-analysis/

@clive has an absolutely first-rate must-read post on Medium about alt text, well worth reading:https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-literary-style-of-alt-text-9f1595cd8f0cWhen I started Mastodon, I didn't even know what alt text was. I quickly learned, helped by others, and now always include it — not only on Mastodon but now also on my blog.#altText #Mastodon

@clive I like the term "enthusiast." 🙂 But I agree: many here (including me) have interests that are focused if not intense.

@philmoscovitch @clive Good piece. My approach to alt text is to assume some life-or-death situation in which I must call a friend and describe an image to a friend in sufficient detail that they can pick it out from a display of random images or roughly reproduce it. I will have only a minute at the phone, so the description must be short and to the point, and my friend can only listen, not speak. However, I can prepare the description ahead of time so it is complete and polished.

@clive @philmoscovitch But you can see how the idea seemed perfectly right to an editor (who by nature is an absolute news hound). I've observed that people often unconsciously assume that their situation or biases are common.

@clive Link works for me, FWIW. some quotes:This prompts an obvious alternative explanation: The increase in fatalities has something to do with pedestrian behavior. If it were driver behavior, after all, every age group would be increasing. And guess who uses smartphones the most? Ages 18-64. Children largely don't have phones and old people don't use them much. So maybe the big change is pedestrians staring at their phones and walking unsafely?1/

@clive Continuing:Granted, this is just a guess on my part. And there's another factor here that the Times doesn't mention: Only fatal crashes have gone up. The total number of pedestrian crashes has been rock steady the entire time. So: the problem is only fatal crashes at night among ages 18-64 in the US. That is indeed very peculiar. And it's at least worth a look to see if this suggests something going on among pedestrians, not just drivers./end

@Amoshias @QasimRashid We all know the massacre that happened on October 7 and nobody defends Hamas or their actions. This article is about what happened in the aftermath, and to point to Oct 7 and say "They started it" is not a valid defense of what Israel has done here. Hamas was wrong, morally and legally. The Israeli government is wrong, morally and legally, in what the article describes. Both statements can be true. It's not the case that if one is wrong the other must be right.
