@todayilearned I love how it has become a "holiday" to burn the fields. There used to be so many food related events that we have replaced with trips to the store.

@futurebird People do what they want and then make excuses to justify their behavior. So many parties & traveling here after the shutdowns (because if your kids go to school online & you work remotely, why not travel overseas?). Some people have a powerful need to socialize that can't be suppressed long.3% of everyone I knew locally died that first year, but for the first time I wasn't sick half the year (we also added hand sanitizer to masking as strep throat is easy to get from surfaces).

@futurebird It doesn't even list eggs, which are a common food (& vaccine) allergen.Plus peanuts (another common one) have nothing to do with other nut allergies. Tree nuts are apparently in the top 10 though. It doesn't even properly list the big 5 food allergens (cow milk, peanuts, soy, shellfish & wheat). But I totally agree on ingredient list, especially for chain restaurants. Plus what about people that don't eat certain foods for religious/personal reasons?

@futurebird I don't think it relates specifically to trans people at all. Please see reactions to cis male hippies/metal fans with long hair, or historical reenactors with period appropriate hair, etc. Long hair is perceived as feminine, even when the person with long hair has a beard and otherwise presents as their gender. These same people will scream at kids/adults that real men can't have hair touching their ears or the back of their neck.😬

@futurebird My neighbors keep outdoor cats to try to rid the neighborhood of wildlife such as birds in addition to copious use of pest control companies, leaf blowers to remove all organic matter, and 24/7 bug zappers. We have enough grasshoppers, bees, ants, crickets, woodlice, slugs & more to share, much to their obvious dislike. They also dislike fruit (such as avocados) from being too close to the fence in case it falls into their yard and poisons their dog.

@futurebird @quietmarc When I want my kids to clean, I set a timer and everyone in the house races to clean as much as possible in 10-30 minutes. It definitely makes cleaning in groups more fun. Plus they know there is an endpoint.

@futurebird We know all about those aphid farming ants. So while not plant pests, they are accessories to plant pests and therefore fit into the plant pests category. (Meant to be read humorously and maybe counts as a #LegalHumor joke?)🤣

@futurebird Cats are disgusting and should only be eaten as a last resort per my WWII European cookbook. Somehow I doubt anyone in the US is hungry enough to eat cats when there are tastier options like squirrels still around. (My MAGA neighbor gave away my pet duck in TX to be eaten though).(Yes, I have all the weird cookbooks).

@futurebird This is why I love assigned seating: You make a chart of where people are supposed to sit as you are introduced (or at the beginning of a new class). Then, if you forget their name, you just look at the chart. (I apologize to all the college classes I subjected to this, but it is very helpful to know who needs to turn off their Bunsen burner ASAP before they start the lab classroom on fire).

@futurebird The Asian groceries in LA (especially H-mart) have gift boxes of fruit that is reasonably priced. But it is more special varieties (e.g. citrus grown on Jeju island) than exceptionally perfect, although sometimes the fruit is individually wrapped. The one time I brought someone 50 pounds of unusual avocados, they were just confused (but apparently they had never had mayo-free guacamole or even an avocado before).

@futurebird There are probably more books on how to deal with too many ants. How to keep them from farming aphids in your garden, how to keep them from spreading plant diseases, etc. But you could reverse engineer them into how to attract ants, maybe, based on how to eliminate them.(Many people seem to consider them on par with invasive rodents and actively try to eliminate them, which seems to be getting more effective).

@futurebird It makes pet chickens seem cheap in comparison. Who needs grocery store eggs when you have fluffy dinosaurs?(Obviously fluffy dinosaurs are illiterate).

@futurebird @whknott Plus you took away a major source of food for wild birds, who enjoy snacking on insects, as well as nesting material for those that need cobwebs for nest building (e.g. hummingbirds). So not only do you no longer hear the insects, but birds and their song also disappears.

@futurebird @rlstone4dems Your school district hires PhDs? Talking to people at community colleges & HS in several states, they were required to pay extra to those with advanced degrees, so you had to get hired first, then go back for the PhD. (We only had 1 math PhD at my high school and that was considered unusual, most of the teachers had bachelor's in their subject with a master's in education and there were a few doctorates in Education in administration who got the degrees to advance).

@ai6yr We have over a thousand species of native bees in California. Why would we need to import bees? (Bad management apparently).

@ai6yr We have thousands of native bees here (you can literally hear them walking by anything in flower), but the "agricultural" areas of California (and most other states) are sad, lifeless places. But that could probably be reversed within a decade or less by changing management practices (e.g. spraying less and adding habitat). I would suspect there are native bees that would move in if the conditions were better. Adding bee & bird habitat increased our yields dramatically.
