This is how it looks from above, where a Siemens #EWSD used to be switching millions of calls for decades. It's now nicely documented, labeled and disassembled and will be carefully reassembled in the home of a private collector. Something sadly no museum known to me has managed to preserve so far. #retronetworking

@penguin42 It had no direct subscriber lines attached, but just connected to a (large) number of V5 access networks geographically distributed a Ross a city. I don't know how many subscribers were once attached to those, but we might be able to determine the capacity of the switch. At the moment I don't know. I also have no idea which SIP softswitch replaced it and how large that is physically

Latest #retronetworking acquisition: One of the first commercially available #ISDN video telephones (this unit built in 1992, but I think the model is available 2-3 years longer). Apparently the "Telekom Bildtel 001" was built around a LOEWE MultiTel TV10 BTX terminal, plus an AEG/OLYMPIA codec unit and a TV camera.

Mh. Starting your work day discovering your workstation (debian unstable) has rendered itself unbootable as somehow the grub-efi package was removed during one of the recent apt upgrade...

@penguin42 yes, surprisingly rare. I guess I see something serious like this once every 5 years.

What an amazing fail at #telefonica - Raising github issues in #opensource projects because some employee voluntarily submitted their e-mail address in the source code (or here: benchmark result). And now accusing the FOSS project of "Abuse" https://github.com/steve-m/speedport_neo_source/issues/1

mh, interesting. Seems like github has now removed the related issues and the entire afserviceTF account. Now the next question is: Was the entire account fake and not even under control of #telefonica ? Guess we'll never know.

Am I the only one wondering why (at least high-end business) laptops still don't have SFP+ or QSFP28 slots these days?

@jacob that's why I moved away from github donations for making financial contributions to FOSS projects. There are other options like @opencollective which of course also take a cut for their overhead, but at least it's a non profit taking that cut.

on my way to Munich today. In the odd case that anyone local in my timeline feels like meeting up tonight, let me know. For the curious: Reason for the visit is to inspect and backup a Siemens EWSD exchange and plan logistics of its upcoming move to the Dresden telecommunications museum. #munich #telecomhistory #retronetworking

Tonight I had a dream involving meeting a (recovered) fefe. Highly unusual, don't recall ever having dreams involving him before. In any case, let's hope for his best recovery and hopefully the dream will become reality at some point #fefe

So there's a decades-old mechanism (and actual standard) how programs lock serial ports on unix-like systems in /var/lock. it's used in practice even in 2025 and #systemd >= 258 simply breaks it with "we don't care". I am not a systemd opponent, but that kind of behaviour [without a prior community-wide discussion or providing patches for known-affected projects and a grace period] is just alienating users and developers https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/38563 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1110980 #systemd #debian

We'll be rescuing another Siemens EWSD digital telephone exchange. If anyone is interested in helping us with disassembly and loading into the truck in Munich on October 23rd/24th, please let me know - more information in German at https://discourse.osmocom.org/t/ewsd-abbauhilfe-in-munchen-am-23-24-10-2025/2312 #retronetworking #telephony #telecommunications #isdn

Just completed the disassembly of another two Siemens EWSD digital telephone exchanges, which are now in a truck on their way to the Telecom Museum Dresden (Fernmeldemuseum Dresden). Largest time sink was untangling the hundreds of cables (mostly with proprietary Siemens connectors)..
