@bonifartius I worked for a Ukrainian farmer who escaped from the Soviet Union while Stalin was in power. He was in his mid 60s and I was about 16 when I worked on the farm he owned in the USA. He hiked out of Ukraine alone at 14 years old and later got his mother and two siblings out. They were living with him when I was doing farm tasks for cash.

@bonifartius The Soviet Union used communism as rhetoric like MAGA uses freedom as rhetoric.The USSR, at least while Stalin was in power was practicing state capitalism and fascism. Fascism isn't guys in shiny boots marching on old newsreels. Fascism is an economic system in which the state and corporate power is merged into a single entity. It doesn't matter if the state owns the corporations like in the USSR or if the corporations own the state like in the modern USA. The workers never controlled the means of production. The aristocracy was replaced with bureaucracy and the feudal landlord was replaced with a state administrator.Slavery in the USA was also corporate ownership of the state. The southern plantation owners had huge amounts of money to wield control over the state.

@retrohondajunki @RememberUsAlways @GW If no one stops Israel, they will exterminate everyone in Gaza, turn it into a Jewish only settlement, continue the forced removal of Palestinians from the land they have stolen, pack the Palestinians into the West Bank and other ghettos, and then they will try to exterminate Palestinians there. The Nazis moved Jews from the ghettos to camps like Auschwitz to keep the genocide out of sight. Israel doesn't have enough territory for that so they just commit their genocide in the ghettos they have forced their victims into.

@yellowbrickc Slaves in the 1800s and women since last year do not have full legal ownership of their own bodies in the USA. They are property of right wing Christian fundamentalists at least in Texas and most other Southern states. Interesting that the former slave states are also the states jumping to own women's bodies now.

@grammargirl I can verify that my mother and many of her siblings, all 14 of them, (boomers and mostly Trumpers) had maybe 4 of them that could read at an adult level. My mother reads at a 2nd grade level and she is 73.

@stux Movies have convinced people that when the robots come for us they will be military robots like in The Terminator. It won't. The robots are already here. They will take our jobs. Many jobs have already been lost to the robots. Under a capitalist system, the 1% will have no use for us once our labor is no longer needed. They will let us starve and kick us out of our rented homes. When the machines start killing, it will be self driving cars running us down not military robots.
