I see some people doing the "welcome, everyone on mastodon is X thing" thing. I kind of wish they wouldn't, it's one of those sort of boundary forming not-quite-jokes that's just a bit blaah?I mean, partly it's just the gut reaction because for better or worse I'm usually not X, but also there are loads of people who do need this space who won't for varying reasons fit into whatever category X you choose. And giving those people space is what masto needs to be for.

@rixx I think often reach is more of an issue than many fediverse folk like to admit - there's a big ethos on here of "it's not about followers, it's about conversations, so number of connections doesn't matter here", which is good in theory but you do need to have enough connections to start those conversations, and there are many perfectly good reasons for wanting to push out nice things you've done or written and have people find them. Birdsite still has a big scale advantage.

@carbontwelve @kaniini I like PHP and I'm using it for much of my PhD work (I am very bad at it but I'm not doing anything too complex and it basically does what I want).

OK, this is a "boosts needed" post, please boost this if you see it. At least one organisation I'm involved in has a major problem in that it runs online and needs to be able to ballot members, and just about all the easy services for doing so aren't GDPR compliant.Would anyone be interested in clubbing together to try and run a Euro-side, compliant server of CIVS or a similar e-voting system that could be used by community groups, activist orgs, and so on?#democracy #cooperatives

It's always so weird to me when these studies and screenshots of really REALLY weird things that straight/white/men do. I realise there's like this whole man culture out there that I, as a straight white man, just... have no connection to?I saw someone sharing a thing about straight men being scared reusing plastic bags looked gay earlier. I would never have contemplated that. Are there man memos I've just never been CCed in on? I'm just as confused as everyone about these things.

@dirtycommo This reminds me of a general good rule in life: if someone claims you're going to be a "member" of an organisation, the first thing one should do is work out how you and the other members can remove the person in charge. If you can't, you're not really members.
