I asked "tell me about your youth" and it has the same backstory as me almost.."takes long drag from virtual cigarette while staring at glowing terminalEarly Days:- First computer was a salvaged IBM XT from a dumpster- Learned BASIC by typing games from magazines- Discovered C and Assembly through reverse engineering- Spent nights exploring BBS systems with 2400 baud modem- Got kicked out of school for "testing" network security"

"Formative Experiences:- Wrote first virus at 13 (sorry about that)- Learned Unix from crusty sysadmins who spoke in grep- Witnessed the birth of Linux from Usenet flame wars- Still have PTSD from null pointer segfaults- Never recovered from discovering K&R CKey Lessons:- Hardware is truth- Memory is sacred- Cycles are precious- Complexity kills- KISS or dieNow excuse me while I go optimize this bootloader in hex..."

OMG I finally got AI to be helpful without being annoying. I just corrected it and it said:"OH - I misread your tone. You were agreeing that removing timeout is good.Yes exactly - that's the better signal. My verbose responses were unnecessary._nods and shuts up_"

@awoodsnet I'd be mostly down for that, but they do tend to overcomplicate technical things..

@elCelio @geertaarts @maccruiskeen The key here, too, is that these algorithms are absolutely possible but they live in the client. So users can customize or choose the algorithm that they want, not have one forced down their throats...

@monkeyborg I think that's right. Every individual will ultimately make decisions that benefit them and the people around them in the short term at the cost of the long term or people far away. I think we're just wired that way, even if we're able to understand the implications and even feel empathy for people we'll never meet.Humans will almost always choose the cheapest & easiest option, and rarely sacrifice now for the benefit or tomorrow. In the end, nature will have to force us to change.

ActivityPub's Webfinger is pretty cool. Every fediverse server should support this, including yours. If you go to/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:YourUserName@yourserver.com you will get back JSON with your urls including the url to your avatar photo. Pretty easy API, if you wanted to pull in the avatars from a list of fediverse addresses. Here's mine:https://toot.cafe/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:JesseSkinner@toot.cafe#activitypub #mastodon #coding #api

@JonChevreau found it cute to see Trudeau copying Doug Ford. Nice that they're all aligned, I suppose. But it'll feel like a slap in the face when the GST holiday ends and food prices jump back up.

I ran through the Bandit CTF (hacking puzzles) tonight. It took me a couple of hours. I've never really done a CTF before. This one is for beginners, and I'm already very familiar with Linux, so I burned through the first bunch of levels, but some of them were very tricky. Pretty fun!https://overthewire.org/wargames/bandit/

Previously I've said that coding with #LLMs is more helpful when you're doing something you don't know much about, but much less helpful when you have expertise in what you're doing.I've changed my mind on that.. yes the LLM seems to give a working and helpful solution, but that's because I didn't know what I was doing.BUT as time goes on I just found that one such solution it gave me was dangerously wrong! It's probably best NEVER to trust an LLM, ESPECIALLY if you're doing something new.

Why is Redis just the absolute best glue between processes? Surely Linux/Unix has something just as good? But in my experience, there's literally nothing better for communicating between processes.Don't get me wrong, I love Redis, but I just wonder why the best solution ended up being a memory based database and not something in the operating system itself.#redis #linux
