I think they should be called "earth rare metals" instead of "rare earth metals" because it's the metals that are rare. Unless of course the intent is that both the metals and the Earth are rare. Then it should be "rare earth rare metals". Basically, the modifier should immediately precede the subject that is actually rare.#RandomThoughts

Today is my birthday. Recognizing birthdays is weird and arbitrary. The Earth isn't really in the same place as last year. The sun isn't even in the same place as last year. In fact, it has never been in the same place within my lifetime, not that of any person currently alive. The perceived cycle isn't even really a true cycle. #RandomThoughts

I do not think it is accurate to say that democracy is being eroded all around the world. Erosion happens naturally. Democracy is being sabotaged and attacked all around the world. Don't apologize for the people actively doing that.

I think people are getting the wrong lesson from AWS and Cloudflare outages. Yes, tech shouldn't be consolidated into near monopolies. But the real lesson is that consolidation is bad for *everything* in every industry. Monopolies are always bad. The capitalism that leads to monopolies is equally so. Important infrastructure of any kind should not be operated at the whim of capitalists. It should be public.
