I finished this last weekend, but I cannot recommend enough Clare Hunter’s wonderful, material biography of Mary Queen of Scots. I’ve read several bios of Mary and plenty of historical novels about her, too. But even though her turbulent life was well known, Hunter’s focus on a life told by the textiles she worked and embroideries she made reanimates her story. I just loved this, just as I loved Threads of Life #maryqueenofscots #embroidery #bookstagram #audiobooks #biography #materialculture

I loved every second of Fierce Appetites by @elizabethboyle. It is so hard to sum up this memoir/book of essays/work of philosophy/history of medieval Ireland in social media friendly bite-size chunks. It is witty, candid (but not confessional), sharp and most of all, it is humane. It is a pandemic diary, a polemic, and a poignant reminder of what makes us and breaks us as humans. AND it offers a brilliant slam dunk case for the humanities. So basically, I loved it @bookstodon

@elizabethboyle @bookstodon apologies as my app is not letting me add Alt Text. Image is the book cover of Fierce Appetites by Elizabeth Boyle. The cover shows a medieval woman on top and in flagrante with a tonsured man. Above the title red flowers are in a scrolling frame.

How on earth had I not read this Dorothy L Sayers novel before? Loved the epistolary format and being in the position of detective in the case. Documents in the Case is a good read for #goldenagemystery fans like me. #dorothylsayers @bookstodon

Please excuse self-congratulation. Someone sent me a review of my Lady’s Magazine book from Review of English Studies. A generous review and the conclusion floored me: “This book offers a powerful refinement of literary history. Its prose is clear and highly engaging, and the argument moves forward deftly with a robust but unobtrusive theoretical underpinning. Recovering The Lady’s Magazine from obscurity is an extremely worthwhile project, and Jennie Batchelor has done it brilliantly well.”
