@pv this sort of medieval-synthesizer style music is amazing. No need to help you, just keep listening. 😉 Maybe, try it through this open source YT front-end for much more minimalistic and more Google-free experiencehttps://invidio.us/watch?v=2Q4mKo9gBF4&feature=youtu.be

@pv I didn't know either a few weeks ago. I have learned about it here. There are multiple Instances of Invidious https://github.com/omarroth/invidious/wiki/Invidious-Instances and also a nice add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/invidition/ that automatically redirect all YT videos. And feel free to post more music suggestions, this one was something completely new to me.

@Matter @rudolf could you tell me something more about choosing #DNS provider. Which one would you recommend and why not just to use the default one?Beside knowing that after typing example.com into a web browser, DNS gives you IP of the corresponding web-server, I'm largely ignorant on the topic.

@lwriemen I agree, however this is sort of egg or chicken situation.General public, most of companies and government agencies won't consider switching to Linux unless it supports MS Office, Photoshop, SAP and others. However, none of the big players will support Linux unless its user base is big enough. As most people hate changes, switching form Windows and at the same time from MS Office is too much of a challenge for them.I see MS Office for Linux as the only way out of vicious circle.

@herve_02 I'm just thinking that switching en mass form Microsoft's proprietary-spyware OS to GNU/Linux would improve privacy and security of the individual users as well as the whole IT infrastructure. If the Adobe and Microsoft products for Linux are need for that, I'm willing to accept that.On the other hand, looking at it in " It's not a bug, it's a feature" perspective, current situation at least helps keeping Linux "pure", disregarding the proprietary drivers, firmware, BIOS anyway.

@jamie I had to write my last thesis in MS Word, so I was glad to see that it runs smoothly on Virtualbox.https://itsfoss.com/install-windows-10-virtualbox-linux/With computer games is much more better, many of them support Linux natively and there is also Stream Proton (sort of enchanted Wine) even for non-Steam games.https://segmentnext.com/2018/12/06/steam-proton-guide/

@Stoori @tootbrute I have stumbled upon OnlyOffice while making a small research for this post. It's actually licensed under #AGPL with its source code available here https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors

@herve_02 Caring for security and privacy of others is needed. The weakest link in our own security are Windows users who we communicate withThe vision you present is gloomy and really believable. Unfortunately, we have to worry about it even now. Just look at the members of Linux Foundation https://www.linuxfoundation.org/membership/members/ ,Microsoft love-lust for open source (buying Github, implementing Linux Kernel in Windows https://itsfoss.com/windows-linux-kernel-wsl-2/ ).MS Office for Linux or not, your dystopia is real threat.

Thoughtful analysis of #Microsoft's lust for #opensource:"Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors to open source project on GitHub (platform now owned by Microsoft). But if you look at their projects, you’ll notice that almost all of the Microsoft’s open source products are aimed at programmers and software developers. This is not love, Microsoft and Linux. This is merely a relationship of convenience."https://itsfoss.com/windows-linux-kernel-wsl-2/

@herve_02 First of all, sorry for the "your" dystopia, not enough characters to word it properly. However, I agree. Such dystopia is a real danger and it might happen anytime. To verify that we are on the same page:Is your point of view that if Microsoft was to port their product on Linux, they wouldn't do so by modifying their product so it runs on Linux but rather through modifying Linux itself so it runs their product, inserting some malicious code in the process.Did I get that right?

@Matter no worries I get that.I have understood the quote that I have cited as: "Look Microsoft is open sourcing not because it wants to share. Microsoft just wants to lure developers into coding even more products that sells, making itself even richer in the process."Have you understood it in a less critical way?

@herve_02 I don't see that happening and find idea that people will switch away from MS Office even less likely. However, there actually might be solutions compatible with the free software ideals.Legislative:Antitrust lawsuit requiring MS to put DOCX into legacy mode and finally support ODT properly.Software:Create FLOSS Office that eliminates DOCX-ODT incompatibilities to bare minimum. As @Stoori has mentioned AGPL licensed OnlyOffice https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors works for her fine so far.

Oh, @Xian_ there are loads of them.https://www.mathsisfun.com/ has quick but complete overviews of topic ranging from basic arithmetic through derivation and integration to application in physics and finance. All in explain-like-I'm-5-years-old style.Haven't used it much, but https://www.khanacademy.org/math seem also good.

@Matter I agree with that. Actually I meant exactly that when making the original toot.Sometimes simply what you write is not the same as what you mean. 🙃

@deadcode @floppy so if I get it right @logfile uses a specialized link to the Mastodon Toot in order to create comments under your blog.Have you also heard about possibility of using a specialized hashtag to do the same thing?Again if I got it right, this is the way @gdroid creates comments for each app.https://gitlab.com/gdroid/gdroidclient/#where-do-the-comments-for-each-app-come-from The code will probably be herehttps://gitlab.com/gdroid/gdroidclient/blob/master/app/src/main/java/org/gdroid/gdroid/CommentListActivity.javaor there https://gitlab.com/gdroid/gdroidclient/blob/master/app/src/main/java/org/gdroid/gdroid/AppDetailActivity.java but I'm not sure.

@WoodenBridge I don't now about any, although this tip from @switchingsoftware might be helpful“For political issues, perhaps the best alternatives are official sites where you can petition governments directly on issues. This more easily gets the attention of people in power, is less likely to sell your data, and governments are often compelled by law to respond to petitions which receive enough signatures.”https://switching.software/ethical-alternatives-to-change-org/

@neauoire if installing Steam that worries, on the brighter side you can also use the Steam's Proton (something like Wine not emulator) also for non-Steam games. https://segmentnext.com/2018/12/06/steam-proton-guide/

@neauoire Oh, at first I though why have you not bought it somewhere DRM-free (I did so with their previous game Mark of the Ninja). But I see now that this one is exclusively on Steam. :/

A week ago, I was asking “what if there was #Microsoft #Office for #Linux”.The question was not as hypothetical as I thought.365 Personal (32 bit) has Silver rating in #Wine Databasehttps://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=31and there are even reports of “Word and Powerpoint run[ning] flawlessly” from 365 ProPlushttps://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=35527see: Comment from Akash, July 1st 2019Just as a reminder, I'm not interested in MS Office for my personal use. Nowadays, I'm using mainly LaTex.@tootbrute@jamie
