Greetings, Mastodon. I am an author, artist, historian, singer, photographer, columnist, science wonk, journalist, former software developer, former network engineer… the list goes on and is varied. I am also a deeply damaged person with a life of numerous tragedies and nightmares. Most of all, I am a person who does not “fit” well into society. I'd like to say thank you to @stux for this instance and my followers who have been so supportive. When I first came here I said I wanted to be my authentic self. It's not easy to open up about my mental illness and life struggles. I've hidden them for many years. Your concern, encouragement, and advice truly help and I am deeply grateful. This is another one of my #watercolor paintings. When I was finishing it I realized it was a self-portrait and added the figure on the shore.

@stux at the risk of taking an unpopular position, I don’t think we need another kill simulator. Particularly one that demonstrates proper tactics and movement to eliminate “targets”.

@stux agreed. This is what Lt. Col. Grossman warned about in “On Killing”. He’s taken a lot of heat from people who claim he said video games make people into killers. He never said that. What he said was games like this train people to be more effective and efficient killers. They also dull people’s aversion to killing. The same is true about some movies and books. Do we want unstable kids and cops “playing” this?

This #WaterColor has vexed me for months. It was the last major success I had before our daughter died of cancer and I stopped painting for two years. I couldn’t bear to try to make anything beautiful when filled with so much sorrow. While I still grieve I’ve begun painting again, but I’ve lost momentum and am slowly regaining my skill. It’s been a hard journey with many failed attempts. Last night I solved two problems and have a better handle on how I painted this. But I’m still#MastoArt

recovering from major back surgery and sitting at my drawing table has been challenging. I must work quickly and, being so out of practice, that leads to catastrophic mistakes. I’m comforted though knowing that this painting was not planned to be anything more than a study. Midway through I accidentally dripped some color on top of the rock. That drip became the lighthouse and ultimately the focal point of a beautiful piece. Still, to see this picture every day and know I have lost much

of the skill needed to make it has been crushing. Worse, my recent #bipolar diagnosis has left me floundering in self-doubt as I have become aware of my ever shifting mental states. And then there’s my career change over a year ago. So much turmoil! But doing good #art requires a quiet and meditative mind. I’m searching for that quiet mind again; I’m looking for those magical moments when light seems to drip from my brush and illusions dance on the paper or canvas. Maybe soon…

Just some pen exercises tonight for #MastoArt . I’ve been struggling with my #bipolar #depression since last week. Even this sketch has been tiring. My mind is on overload and I want to hide, but I don’t want to sleep. Here I am then. Feeling like this #sketch is pointless while I listen to the Foo Fighters.
