@zens Thank you for not leaving Gen X out of the poll!

@zens Yes! There have been decades of articles that talk about Boomers and Millennials and leave Gen X out of the discussion. Or maybe leave GenX out of the headline and mention in one brief sentence in the article. I really wish I had started collecting them in the late 90s / early 2000s. I would have dozens, or hundreds. Here’s one funny example https://www.investopedia.com/articles/professionals/093015/how-get-boomers-millennials-working-together.asp

@info_activism This sentence should note that the journal has placed a statement of concern on the study “(A subsequent study suggests that if taken soon after diagnosis, ivermectin can help prevent serious illness.)” It’s a meta-analysis and there are concerns about data used in the included studies. The article is providing an example of the problems it tries to address.

@iramjohn @futurebird You May know this, but Twitter went through a stage where every retweet prompted you to add your own comments to make it a QT. So clearly at some point Twitter had a reason to think QTs were good, for some definition of good.

Planning a #conference? Include Mastodon at least as prominently in your materials as you do other social media. If you ask presenters or attendees for handles, ask for their Mastodon handle. This is an important opportunity for the Fediverse to reach, welcome, and engage key global audiences. #academia #event

@simon I can see them being useful for ‘make this email sound more friendly.’ We should probably all start discounting the friendliness of emails by about 20% if that catches on, though.

@jwz @simon I think for government documents you will need to do the 6 months of data entry first, then compare with LLM models to see what it gets right and wrong. LLM may become useful for ongoing updates. People also tend to underestimate how much it will matter if the 20k reports are from the same police department or hundreds of them.

@info_activism Read to the end for a discussion of ads removed for policy violations and the hundreds of thousands of times they are seen before they are removed. It would be great to have a follow up article showing the types of ads campaigns are putting out there in violation of policy. And are these violations of company policy or public policy?

@losttourist @ernest I feel like we are just shy of the point where a tech journalist breathlessly profiles founder Kay Bin.

Anyone have an example of a @Codeberg #Codeberg repo that is particularly well organized? Toot your own horn (hah!) or lift up someone you know who’s doing great. Looking for things like a useful readme, tagged issues, etc.

@adrinux @Codeberg Thanks! And have you considered using the wiki? I'm even earlier days, but that was suggested to me.

@simon My fear is that coders will be so impressed with the way these LLMs respond to questions about code that they will trust them to answer questions about human rights, history, health, etc.

@simon Some of that will surely happen. But we know it is hard to dislodge people from sources that tell them what they want to hear. The history of people googling ‘Why are women ____’ and similar is not encouraging.

@simon I think most critics recognize LLMs will be good for some things. In particular, they will be good for productivity where high volume is good and low quality is OK. So we anticipate their use for things like creating marketing copy, rationalizing insurance claim denials, and generating various medium stakes application materials (yes, probably also for writing code). But if your job is more in the evaluation, decision, or coordination space, these make your job harder.

@simon For so many of us, our first experience is with their output of almost-plausible garbage getting in the way of information we are trying to evaluate, whether that is internet search, scammy GitHub or other comments trying to build up an identity, or application materials.I think a big divide is people whose jobs involve producing things, especially where others review their work and/or bear the risk, and people whose work mostly involves evaluation of various types.

@simon 9700 doesn’t actually seem like a large number after what the government dealt with for net neutrality. One of several articles about the flood of bot comments: https://www.wired.com/story/bots-form-letters-humans-fcc-net-neutrality-comments/
