This tree is named Hyperion. Standing at a height of 115.61 metres, it is Earth's tallest known living tree.Hyperion is a coast redwood (sequoia sempervirens) and it lives somewhere in Redwood National Park in California. The exact location is remote, and is being kept secret to avoid any potential ecological damage or vandalism which too many visitors might bring.

@Laurelai I’ll admit, it’s better than fossil fuels, because anything’s better than fossil fuels. And I don’t buy into the demonisation that a lot of people spread. But, per watt, solar energy is currently the cheapest energy source on the planet. Particularly in places without an existing grid, like Africa and parts of India, where nuclear will still involve laying a lot of cables.

"Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time — the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression. Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts. Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood."— Martin Luther King Jr, Nobel Prize acceptance speech, 1964.

In the time it took you to read this toot, planet Earth lost over 200 trees as over 3 acres of forest were destroyed. 😔🌳

The other evening, a friend from Corsica was telling me about planting trees using salvaged World War 2 land mines.A lot of soil in Corsica is very compacted so, after the war, people would drill a hole into the ground and drop a little explosive into it. The blast would loosen a small patch of ground and also fertilise it — the explosives used potassium nitrate, which is great for fruit trees. So there are orchards in Corsica which were planted with explosives, and I think that's cool. 🍎 💣

Have you ever noticed how many comic book villains are scientists who're facing a crisis over a lack of research funding? Relatable TBH.

In the very centre of Paris, there’s a little flower market which I love to wander around. It’s a patchwork collection of little shops selling everything from seeds to orchids to bird houses. One shop there has a couple of trays with miscellaneous unlabelled plants on sale very cheap. Sometimes I can’t help myself, even though I don’t know what I’m picking up.Apparently, this adorable little thing is a strawberry saxifrage. Isn’t it cute?

Minor celebration this evening after making pajeon using homegrown garlic greens! The first vegetables I've actually harvested from my kitchen here. Not exactly a major harvest, but still, quite satisfying!

FYI, if you have any garlic cloves in your kitchen that are starting to sprout, just plant them. They're quite fast growing and the greens go well in all kinds of things! 💚

So much of internet culture is so venomous these days. Complaining. Pessimism. Outrage. Despair. All about venting your spleen about anything and everything all of the time. I’m so tired of it.Can we all please keep making things as positive as possible in this place? I feel like that’s the best way to rebel against it all.

@Some_Person Oh gods, this. So much this. I’ve endured so much capitalism-related anxiety because of my decision to become a scientist. And practically everyone working in science has to constantly beg for money just to continue doing whatever it is they’re trying to do!

Today's tea is Fujian oolong. A cosy tea that always wraps me up like an old blanket. Familiar, but always welcome.
