@lauren @cstross as a fellow risk analyst, your comment seems like folktale-grade analysis. The WTC/911 reports don’t decry fire doors OR structural design as significant problems. Quite the contrary. And ‘seemed odd to me’? Cite a skyscraper struc engineer. Can’t, because the damn buildings behaved admirably: an immediate collapse would have caused an order of magnitude more deaths. 20,000 gals of jet fuel took an hour to an hour and a half to get thru fireproofing on structural steel enough to cause a collapse. That is insanely well-engineered, given it isn’t even a tested scenario.

@dave @davew (snickers) uh, this is a rhetorical q, right?

@dave honestly, ads have diluted google. Not just failed-to-improve but incrementally worse.

@foone 1980-2010 that was always proprietary s**t. Nowadays, Europe mandating usb-c feels close to solving it.

@foone if spelling matters, °C deserves bonus points for historical name Centigrade. I mean, ‘s a cincheroony for spelling cent-I-grade.

@foone does tapping a surface on each get a different ‘ting ting’ sound due to different pressures? Where they’re bare chassis, is a crack visible back on the rear end of the tube? That’s not always easily seen; some breaks hide, esp under coils.

@foone A: it’s part of why my retro fetish ends at the win threshold. Plenty of 8 bit fun to be had. No mfc.B: I think McCarthy’ Dynamics of Software Development mentions how/why they created mfc. First generation of c++ (like Microsoft c v6?) got low adoption, with random excuses. They added mfc and app/messaging/etc templates to ease devs into it, and thus Visual C++ was born.

@foone didn’t you recently touch on early computer graphics platforms that allowed software selection of NN colors out of a larger palette?Asking because a 4 or 6 color variant of this could make rotating the palette turn what you wrote into Fuck This — color 3 near-black and color 4 near-white: the bottom 80% of the first o for a u, leftward fraction for a c, a color 4 spine and angled line added to the n for k. Then T, parts of the u and r for the h, with some color 4 for the rest. Then i, then most of the g, extending that tail alll the way back underneath.#steganography in a sig.

@ricci European # concentration seem less distressing if we think of them as a consolidation like in the us, or look at how concentrated (by state or metro area) the seemingly-diverse US companies are? E.g., 20% overall for hertzner, 16% overall for OVh, etc. the one way, or that NYC/SF (the two digital ocean towns) likely are DCs of several hosting providers?

@foone seems reminiscent of hacks that padded files to match a checksum. Forcing to a desired url might suck (not enough bits in a qr, plus it’s intrinsic error correction). Forcing to where new qr (including error correction) was a url, though…. Seems possible.

@foone I mean, ‘dynamic linked library’; it was an easy way to bundle up code and data.
