@tiago The pan-genome paper isn't behind a pay wall as far as I can see?

@tiago You mean the NYT article? Now that is behind a paywall, and I can't read it 😂 I couldn't see anything in the nature article that suggested the data will not be freely available. Indeed the paper states the data is available on INSDC.

@tiago Well that sucks. Although a firewall is not quite the same as a pay wall. I don't know what the intention is here, but a lot of genomics data is kept behind privacy-walls where you have to pass ethical review to get access to it. Indeed, that seems to be what is happening here: " the scientists next plan to consult with community leaders about if or how to make the data accessible through request."

@tiago Sorry, I misread your original toot. If the data is like other genomics data in controlled access repositories, gaining access to it will be fairly trivia. I have access to many controlled access datasets. Geneally its as simple as filling in a form saying "I am a real scientist. This is what I want to do with the data - you can see its not trying to identify people, nor is it eugenics. I'm not making money from it. I can guarentee my computer systems are secure".

@tante @CatherineFlick Good luck defending a dissertation written by an LLM in a viva exam.
