I got my hands on a second hand Fitlet2 which comes with an Atom E3950, 8GB of RAM, 64G of M2.SATA, 2x i211 RJ45 and 1x i210 SFP cage, running ~11 Watts.I took it out for a spin on https://ipng.ch/s/articles/2023/02/12/fitlet2.html

With some care on the VPP configuration (notably RX/TX descriptors), this unit can handle L2XC at (almost) line rate in both directions (2.94Mpps out a theoretical 2.97Mpps), with one VPP worker thread, which it not just good, it’s Good Enough™, at which time there is still plenty of headroom on the CPU, as the Atom E3950 has 4 cores.

In IPv4 routing, using two VPP worker threads, and 2 RX/TX queues on each NIC, the machine keeps up with 64 byte traffic in both directions (ie 2.97Mpps), again with compute power to spare, and while using only two out of four CPU cores on the Atom E3950.

For a $400,- machine that draws close to 11 Watts fully loaded, and sporting 8GB (at a max of 16GB) this Fitlet2 is a gem: it will easily keep up 3x 1Gbit in a production environment, while carrying multiple full BGP tables (900K IPv4 and 170K IPv6), with room to spare. It’s a classy little machine!

Today marks the one year anniversary of RIPE having run out of IPv4 addresses to allocate to new LIRs.RIPE NCC use a waiting list to allocate recovered IPv4 addresses to our member. This is also shown on the graph below, which should fluctuate over time - falling when recovered addresses become available and are allocated, and rising as new IPv4 requests are added to the waiting list. Both the table and graph are updated every three hours.

@alarig @jeroen @PorCus ipng.ch/s/articles/ have discussed a few tangible (cheap, medium, expensive) gear. Take a look at the Netgate 6100, the Fitlet2 and the APU6 for examples.

@mrhamel For sure you're right to say "I can write code that executes faster", and I am certainly in that camp. However, using Ansible, "just works" and "huge ecosystem in Jinja2" are my main drivers.I don't need speed of execution, I need simplicity and when changing the bahavior of an aspect of my fleet, simply wheeling over the fleet in 5 seconds, 5 minutes of 5 hours doesn't really matter to me.Value(my time) >> Value(computers doing work for me)

Had the pleasure to hang out with John and Sue for an upcoming podcast series. It was a fun day recording what may be the pilot episode (and if not that, one of the first ones they made).<3
