@thenewoil "Time is money" as they say. It looks like it takes more time to do the good deeds to decrypt instead of paying kind of on the spot and hoping they provide the decryption key. But you're also still hoping the same from these guys as well.If they're genuine, they better have a large-enough team to get through their victims' claims of good deeds in a reasonable amount of time.End of possibly-uninformed take πŸ˜…

@devinprater That's what I thought. Now I gotta learn to use the more appropriate emoji, rather than going with like meme-culture meanings my friends would also use. Some of the emoji also don't look exactly what we'd want to express, so we end up using emoji that would be technically wrong. It's also a bit worse with other emoji fonts whose own art style can make people use or not use some emoji. Most of the emoji are pretty straightforward across fonts, but some of them look not as we'd expect or think.

@thenewoil I wonder how this could affect European Oculus users. Looks like the hardware just won't "work" anymore.

@thenewoil They recently announced that they're going to be dropping the Facebook account requirement for a Meta account, according to their blog post.Apparently was something that was in the works, but maybe their legal trouble made them speed up the process.

@Natsura I vividly remember seeing many stars in the sky when I was wee. Now it's like you can just see constellations and hardly any of the other stars. πŸ˜•

@Natsura Been masking since the start, and will keep doing it even after whenever it ends despite the shitty selfishness around that's making it last longer.

@thenewoil Reminds me of another similar attack method, but with the blinking LEDs for disk activity!https://www.techrepublic.com/article/researchers-use-hacked-hard-drive-led-to-steal-data-from-air-gapped-computer/Title: Researchers use hacked hard drive LED to steal data from air-gapped computer

If you want to add a reason to use Signal over WhatsApp, here's this:WhatsApp's only (possibly only easy) way to back up and restore chats is through Google Drive. If you don't use Google Drive for whatever reason (Google itself for privacy reasons, chat history with media is too big to upload on a slow or limited connection, not enough space in your Google Drive to hold your backup, and whatever other reason), you're going to have a hard time importing those chats onto a new device. You're going to end up looking at some third-party solution to do it.Signal upon first install now asks if you want to import from a new device, requiring you to have the old device with you, and guides you through the process without having to use anything like Google Drive.

It used to be that you'd have to place the backup file from the old device into the Signal folder on the new device. Signal would then see the file only during setup. It wasn't obvious where you had to put it, but this new way is much more normal-people-friendly.

@thenewoilOn that fifth paragraph (too many characters to quote it here), I can imagine that the Zimbabwean government might be able to falsify evidence so that they look just fine, and (might be just me) potentially gradually paint the activists as terrorists, justifying using NSO Group crap.

@jensimmons Those people I'm sure are likely to refer the time between 2020 and some of 2021 as "during COVID", which always bothered me because we're still in bloody "during COVID".My folks (and me for sure) got COVID in a non-"during COVID" time of 2022. πŸ˜’

@jeff I can kind of see the pharmas buying ad space so that spaces that could have been for vaccine and masking campaigns would have a harder time budging in.But I don't understand why COVID "ended a long time ago", but it's prolonged. Like, they say the opposite. If it's prolonged, then it's not ended. If it's already ended, then there's nothing to prolong. 🀨

@thenewoil Gonna guess:He has too few internal engineers working on it, and wants to open-source it so people interested in playing with it will end up essentially work for him for free.

@thenewoil From 4 August until 3 November, 91 or 92 days' worth of fines. So, in total, it'll be a max fine of $9,100,000 or $9,200,000 if Meta doesn't do anything in time. And if Meta ends up eating that $9,100,000 or $9,200,000 (whether they couldn't do a thing in time or just pass it as part of the business), what would happen next? Would Norway end up doing a another round of fines? Would be nice if they did, and if the rate were higher than $100,000.

@Linux_in_a_Bit One possible solution I sometimes think about is several stations for rail-based transport every so often, and they have their own parking lot or lots for cars and bikes. One section of the train (or tram? I dunno) would be for people's bikes if they choose to take their bikes to town. Maybe an additional one for temporarily storing people's belongings in like lockers to bring back to their car when coming back home? Dunno how allocating them and preparing against bad people would work out. πŸ€”There will always, however, be a lane or several lanes for going as directly to hospitals for ambulances and regular people themselves. Veterinary clinics as well! And stores to get feed and farming equipment! People working there would most likely have to get there by car, since however many already exist may already be so far away.Very likely not perfect, but sometimes I just like to imagine something better πŸ™‚

@Linux_in_a_Bit I remember seeing various clips on NotJustBikes of people loading their bikes on trains, and it looked like a good solution to go somewhere that might be too far to bike. Pretty much a part of my idea.Learnt from a friend a little while ago that a highway-along trail that goes to a station in a town about 13 minutes by car from where I live used to be a railroad, and it surprised me that a train used to go by here.I doubt there'll ever be a running train there again, since it's now pretty much taken by some people who choose to go via four-wheel or snowmobile, and space around it would be right near houses. I get the feeling the homeowners there wouldn't like so many cars parked so near. πŸ˜• The land is also marshy and that might make planners be like 😬 (I don't know how they'd actually deal with that)
