@polymerwitch This is why I struggled and failed to care when it was brought up in my household's server. Thank you for articulating it.If I'm understanding you correctly, the structure of a platform used by organizers, however seemingly democratic, affects a movement to a huge degree. The structure of Reddit especially doesn't seem conducive to meaningful change at a kind, consistent pace.

Just for some perspective, the distinction between a slap and a punch is a diversion.Starting when we turned 18, my system spent the better part of a decade trying to escape an abusive home. We were never hit, only grabbed. On one of these occasions, a friend's family bought us a plane ticket and covered our rent in a new city while we found work. We have not gone back.Abuse of any kind is not entertainment.

The best arrangement of The Carpenters' "Close to You" is the one from the surrealist fantasy film Mirrormask. In the protagonist's dreamworld, she's given an Evil Makeover by royal clockwork dolls that sing to her while applying her makeup and dressing her in new (evil!) clothes.I don't think there is a musical number in cinema that has had such a lasting impact on us as that one.

On a systemic level:- wastewater surveillance- contact tracing- accessible RATs and PCR tests- adequate death registration and coroners services (you don't have to be medically qualified to be an investigator in my province)- paid sick leave- universal basic income- accessible respirators- building code upgrades- vaccine equity

On a community level:- offer to clean for, cook for, and transport long COVID survivors- build and decorate Corsi-Rosenthal boxes together- provide evidence-based information; be honest about what you don't know- help people assess their ventilation and filtration needs- stay connected with experts and organizations to stay up to date- donate excess supplies to people in need

People have asked me this question a few times and I understand the despair and hopelessness behind it. It feels like there's no end in sight. The problem here, I would argue, isn't pathogens. It's institutions, cultural values, and messaging. We can contain this on a community level; we've seen people do it. Two women achieved a 97% vaccination rate in their hometown of Panola, AL by doing a doorknocking campaign in 2021.

Again: ~97% of people in Panola decided to get vaccinated because Dorothy Oliver and her county commissioner spent time listening to their concerns. The average vaccination rate in Alabama at the time was 38%!When we tell people what to do, we disempower them. But when we ask them what their experience is and what kind of community efforts they're most interested in, we involve them and show them that they actually matter.

This kind of engagement requires patience and conflict resolution skills. You have to be professional, empathetic, charismatic, friendly, and knowledgable. (So...sales.)When you look someone in the eye and tell them that they matter and they're important, it changes everything. It is incredibly disarming. People expect you to fight them or condescend them, not to care about them. That is something the state can never do for us.

Rapid antigen tests and carbon dioxide monitors are warning systems, not approval processes. With a RAT, you're looking for a positive. A negative is fine, but does not exclude the possibility of infection. With a CO2 sensor, you're looking for a large number of parts per million (>1,200 ppm). Depending on the size of the room and the number of people present, a low reading (400-1200 ppm) is fine, but does not exclude poor filtration. You're looking for the warning, not for the approval.

For the uncertain:A positive result, however faint, means you are infectious. Continue isolating even if you feel fine.A CO2 reading >1,200 ppm means you need to get those windows open, keep your respirator on, or maybe just dip.

So if I did an online workshop on pandemic self-defense – emphasizing deescalation, conflict resolution, and boundaries – would people be interested?I see a lot of people coming to the roundtable asking how to deal with loved ones who are minimizers. Not something that can be solved with Corsi-Rosenthal boxes.
