@freemo Missed this comment. I don't agree, in that I don't think that ignorant, gullible people ought to be swept in by highly promoted quackery if we can help it.

@freemo who would have done the research needed to let people know that thalidomide, a drug then being prescribed for morning sickness, was the cause of fetal development abnormalities resulting in serious birth defects?

@freemo It could be that the right wingers have already cut you off and thus missed the survey (or are over on Truth Social and not ever here). Or, it could be due to definitions of "engagement". The extended family members with whom we have chosen not to engage with much see themselves as very tolerant. They are adamantly non racist, they think that they don't even see color. As evangelists, it is their job to inform the rest of the family that certain attributes ("chosen behaviors") such as homosexuality, or beliefs, such as rejecting their version of Christianity or voting Democratic, will lead straight to hell (which to them is a literal place). That's not seen as intolerance, they see it as "love". They very much want to be "family" and engage with us. They would very much want to share a family dinner. But the rest of us couldn't even get to please pass the potatoes without enduring a lengthy prayer for our souls. And really, it is hard to know what to say. The only hope is that there are more open to discussion offspring involved.

@freemo I think that we can afford to take care of people and the environment, all of which is investing in the future, and that the main issue is the Trumpian tax cuts.

@freemo Now that I have these on I will leave them for a while. But I also have a pair of comfy sort of Birkenstock style toe separation sandals. I'll try to remember to post that sometime.

@freemo @luckytran The conclusion from the article Dr Freemo cites further down in the thread is" As a conclusion we can say that, while it is evident and commonly accepted that wearing a face mask is very important for reducing the virus spread, especially in circumstances where proper ventilation and social distancing cannot be guaranteed, our study underlines that wearing a face mask is really beneficial only if it is used correctly. " https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-20692-9. For a business like In-N-Out Burger that would require that an employee ought to be provided with enough masks that they can be changed regularly, and very briefly removed and replaced when the need arises to converse with someone having difficulty hearing them. Much like also ought to happen with disposable gloves.

@freemo @luckytran We ought to have learned from the pandemic experience that we need to be much more attentive to indoor air quality, social distancing and relationships between those two. Even where we are packed in like sardines, as in an airplane, structural modifications could help. Meanwhile, I like my envo mask, with lots of replacement N95 filters

@freemo Conveying English grammar can be confusing. Adult to toddler: Do you want me to pick you up? Toddler holds up arms and agrees; Pick you up! Adult: No, when you talk about yourself you should say me. Say pick me up. How is that supposed to make sense? (but I guess it will eventually).

@freemo Yeah, I would agree that adults spewing baby talk probably have very few thoughts about language skills. Pronoun confusion aside, 2 year olds can actually have quite a lot to say.

@freemo Yes, and it gets codified in certain circles of educational academia. I remember a first grade teacher telling me that 6 year olds were too young to comprehend fractions. And I'm like what??? 2 year olds can grasp 1/2 easily and have no difficulties in visually dividing things up equally with a small group of friends. Just try giving one an extra cracker and see what the rest have to say about it.

@freemo @futurebird @andyhilmer I think that "banned" is the wrong term to uses in most school districts. They simply lack the capacity to teach advanced math, including Calculus, even if they thought it was important and wanted to do so. Starting with early grades, they think of math as a series of drills to be memorized. Who would teach the needed abstract reasoning concepts? It is the lefty liberal districts, that do have some math capable teachers who do actually ban access to higher level math. They do so because they are worried about "gaps", the early sorting of students into high and low math tracks, a practice that disproportionately disadvantaged Black and Latino students and made it harder for them to access advanced courses down the line. If you prohibit Algebra until 9th grade, some students are either getting outside supplementation, or they are being slowed down. Opportunities to burst forward are also not accessible. https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/san-francisco-insisted-on-algebra-in-9th-grade-did-it-improve-equity/2023/03Of course the issue isn't just school sorting, it is social and educational privilege that enables some families to provide their offspring with enriched environments, starting at the preschool level. It is hard to create catch up opportunities in public schools, especially when so many elementary school teachers have week abstract learning/math skills themselves. And we are a far cry from being a society where most adults understand at least the basic concepts of rate of change or approaching a limit. People don't understand that Calculus might actually have some relevance.

"The inspectors concluded they couldn’t investigate because OSHA is banned from enforcing safety laws on farms with fewer than 11 workers unless they have employer-provided housing known as a “temporary labor camp.”Since 2009, at least 17 workers, most of them immigrants, have died on Wisconsin dairy farms. Twelve of the deaths happened on farms with fewer than 11 workers. OSHA did not inspect eight of those 12, each time citing the small farms exemption." https://www.propublica.org/article/wisconsin-dairy-farms-osha-safety-death-investigation-immigrant-workers
