@mikemathia The summer to starting college in 2004, I went up to my school for orientation, and one of my older buddies had joined a fraternity. So after orientation, we went to his frat house for a party, and the very first image I have of college parties is seeing a bunch of tripping frat guys watching someone spin with milkdrop attached to a projector on a wall, haha. You just unlocked some wild memories in me haha.

@Linux why would i use this when steam has a superior streaming option built directly into the client? Everything this does, steam has done natively for multiple years now, including web browser invites to streaming multiplayer games WITH current firefox support already rolled out.

@aral It's interesting that the term for people who use technology is also the term people use to describe drug addicts."Chronic users are chronic losers!"

@foone tfw when you use macro programs to click on GUI elements then need to hunt down a program to automatically align windows in the precise location so the event clicks land on the right ui buttons

@tomcom @KimSJ The Z80 isn't going nowhere. The very first FOSS fabrication of an open source Z80 occurred days ago: https://github.com/rejunity/z80-open-siliconPeople can now freely produce their own Z80 clones through companies like tiny tapeout. Z80 lives.More info: https://tinytapeout.com/runs/tt07/fabrication plans were finalized June 1st, and the first fabrication run was successful. They are gearing up for a full production run, the new z80s will be available for purchase by October.

@Linux games outright play better on linux these days than windows. A common issue with PC games today is shader compilation stutter, where the game pauses for brief moments of a second every time a new effect is encountered, thousands of times per gaming session.Steam has the ability to get around this problem. When booting a game, it'll first download shaders to eliminate stutter. BUT ONLY FOR VULKAN, not DX12.in linux with proton everything runs on vulkan by design, stutter isn't a thing.

@Linux when it comes to *really* old PC games, linux is also way better than windows because it can still run Windows 16-bit applications through WINE. Windows lost this ability ages ago. Ironically there's now a ancient project out there to port WINE to windows specifically for these old 16-bit apps. How funny!

@Linux Same game, on same machine, run in linux vs windows, will run better in linux, thanks to this alone. The way it all works is steam will automatically crowdsource the shaders from other players who have configs matching yours. As more people play, more complete shader configs are produced, and over time, the stutter completely eliminates. This works in windows too, but steam only does it for vulkan games. 99% of games on windows are DX12 not vulkan. In linux, DX12 is converted to vulkan.

@Linux A classic example of a game with crippling shader compilation stutter, which doesn't have this problem in linux, is Baldur's Gate 3. In windows, it's *awful,* in linux, it's flawless. People attributed the fix early on to the steam deck, but it actually works with all linux distros. The success depends on whether or not your specific cpu/gpu/etc config is widely shared with others.I've been playing games on Linux since the Loki days. Linux gaming is entirely better than windows today.

@Linux I have an arcade machine, and there is a PC inside to download and play games like Mortal Kombat 1. Several years back, a windows update killed the machine. Every time I'd try to reinstall windows on it, it'd blue screen instantly. Just completely unreliable. Tried reinstalling windows dozens of times. Steam Proton released that same year and I switched to linux on the machine. Linux saved the arcade cabinet, the same machine works perfectly with linux but won't boot with windows.

@Linux I got into linux specifically for games. The very first time I installed linux, was Red Hat 5.0 specifically for Quake III. Microcenter was selling Quake III, which was still newish, for $5, provided it was the linux version. Right next to it, they had a boxed copy of redhat. My dad and I had been curious about linux for a while, so he picked up redhat and i picked up quake 3. A friend of ours at a PC Users group helped us set it up. I've been running linux as my daily driver ever since.

@Linux I never, ever thought linux gaming would get to this point. I'd hoped it would, naturally, but I realistically never saw this. I was part of that first group which switched to linux for game dev. I cut my teeth on SDL and OpenGL when DirectX was the hotness. I live with gcc and gdb and gnu in general. What proton and Valve has done to linux gaming has been unbelievable. Never in a million years did I think we'd get here. If you haven't paid attention to linux gaming, you'll be shocked.
