For those who maybe aren’t as terminally online in Aotearoa, Cyclone Gabrielle looks like it’s heading our way at the top of next week. Current predictions are that it’s going to be a Category 3 when it makes landfall here. Which means it’s a fucking doozey. If you’re in the top half of the North Island, you should check your emergency supplies and make sure you have a grab bag ready to go. I’ll be pulling updates from Weather Watch, with a side of Metservice#CycloneGabrielle

For context, currently it looks like Gabrielle is going to be running pretty much the same line as ex-cyclone Giselle - the cause of the Wahine Ferry sinking in 1968, our worst modern maritime disaster. There’s potential for the path to change or for the storm to lose energy, we should see this sort its shit out over the next 24 hours or so. But by the time we know for sure, it’ll be too late to sort your own shit out.

Your emergency supplies should be at least 3 days worth of things. ALL OF THE THINGS. This includes at least: - 3L of water per person, per day - Medication- Water for pets - 3 days of canned, tinned, or dry food - A can opener - Don’t forget snacks - a way of heating the food if needed (ie a camping stove, with fuel) - Buckets, plastic bags, & a shovel for waste management - First aid kit- Hand sanitizer - Torches with fresh batteries - Candles, holders, & a way to light them

You should charge battery banks if you’ve got them. It’s worth getting a little radio, whether hand crank or battery, so you’re not draining your phones listening for updates. Don’t forget toilet paper! It’s a good idea to have work gloves, even gardening gloves are sweet, a good multitool with pliers and a sharp blade, gaffer or duct tape, electrical tape, and superglue - you can bodge a lot of temporary solutions with this combo. All of this should be in sealed waterproof containers

Your grab bags are far more simple: - Medication - Identity documents - A full change of clothes - Something to sleep in - A bonus set of socks & undies - Phone charger - Essential toiletries Also consider: - A small thing you’d be heartbroken to never see again (ie beloved soft toy or sentimental necklace) - Do your pets need meds? - Book &/or game Touch base with your humans and see if anyone needs a hand assembling these, or needs moral support. And stay safe Aotearoa x

Just a quick note about the food supplies - it’s definitely best to assume you’re not going to be in a position to be cooking or heating anything. I usually have a few things that are definitely tastier if they’re hot but are perfectly adequate cold, coz sometimes hot food makes all the difference. This is stuff like freeze dried tramping kai, canned chilli beans, and potato flakes. Better hot. Edible cold. & food supplies all need to be shelf stable, not fridges, in case power goes out

I was lying on the floor trying to get a nice photo of my friends’ dog Kitty enjoying the late afternoon sun, when she noticed I was lying on the floor and demanded cuddles. By demanded I mean she climbed into my arms and wagged. And who am I to deny such a cute patoot?! So have a series of photos of the cuddles. And a final photo of her in the sun, some 45 minutes after I first tried to take her photo 😂 #Dog #DogsOfMastodon #SummerIsFinallyHere #Photography #NinjaAdventures

Yesterday I visited a different friend as we were carpooling up to our friends’ wedding - so we had a cute lunch hang at their place before getting ready. Which of course I used the time to befriend both of their cats - including the one that does not like people. At all. Who ended up trying to sit on my lap about ten minutes after I took this picture on the chai #CatsOfMastodon #NinjaAdventures

I feel bad on one hand, because there’s a real shortage of paid mahi in the arts at the moment so some folks would kill to be in my position. But unfortunately the folks who are short aren’t the ones who can do this work, and there’s no bloody budgets to train up the handful that possibly could with a bit of prodding
