@timbray @jjoelson @kcivey @mashbooq @davidgerard @davew @mitchw @BarbNerdy Btw, also 30 years ago, when I was an executive in the newspaper industry, I used to tell whoever would listen that there's no such thing as local on the Internet. Didn't stop otherwise smart people and companies from throwing 10s of millions of dollars at local news projects. Who wants to keep trying to make that work?

@timbray @jjoelson @kcivey @mashbooq @davidgerard @davew @mitchw @BarbNerdy Again, your choice. I will tell you as a former publisher for some major titles that I would have no problem walking away from you, and you're welcome to find your news somewhere else, because I wouldn't see the reason and purpose to break my dollars into pennies to satisfy someone who will likely never be satisfied. Subscribe direct or buy through an aggregator.

@kcivey @timbray @jjoelson @mashbooq @davidgerard @davew @mitchw @BarbNerdy Try walking up to a newsstand and offering to pay to read just one article. The economics of what you want are simply not sustainable for the news industry, not even for very successful independent journalists outside of news organizations who have always wanted to embrace that model (see linked article). There's always the library if you want something for free.https://www.cjr.org/tow_center_reports/digital-platforms-and-journalistic-careers-a-case-study-of-substack-newsletters.php

@lnxw37a2 @BarbNerdy @davidgerard @timbray @davew @jjoelson @kcivey @mashbooq @mitchw And they will starve you of knowledge, so I guess that's a fair non-transaction.

One thing I've learned from being on Mastodon (third time around) is not to reply or otherwise engage with tech people on their own posts. Most--not all, but most--are only interested in presenting their own opinions, and are not interested in any discussion. Reply with something you have deep personal knowledge about based on decades in specific areas of business, but which doesn't align with their views or experience? You're a reply guy. Much worse here than Twitter. Silencing myself now.

@wjmaggos Don't get me wrong, I've met and followed and talked with many good, even brilliant, and welcoming, tech people here across instances and I've learned a lot. Frankl bad experiences go back to the earliest days of the service, with some personalities believing talent excuses behavior, which might be one of the reasons some are more comfortable away from mainstream endeavors. If it's like that for me, who spent 30 years in tech, I can only imagine what it's like for civilians.

@GottaLaff @Teri_Kanefield Post is attempting to deconstruct the news industry by breaking publisher dollars into micropayment pennies so they can skim off the top; goal is 1000 Seth Abramsons under their banner. The algorithm and behavior management systems they are rolling out to achieve that end, along with the complete lack of ethics among their leadership, are,frankly, repulsive.

Well the Threads era is over. Need a shower. Wasn’t one to subscribe to the political horseshoe theory, but after a few months in a blue bubble, I see more similarities between MAGA and some alleged progressives than not, and understand why people are often repulsed. Anyway. I’m promising myself once again to stay away from algorithm-driven platforms populated and manipulated by charlatans whose driving motivation is to increase follower count. Fediverse is a much better and more honest place.

@clive @timbray @kissane @tim Tim is exactly right. Paying someone to package "content" is a lot less expensive than paying someone to practice "journalism" or create "art." And look what that simple term has done to journalism and art over the last three decades.

mas.to and Meta: bilateral mistrust. When I posted on Threads about mas.to suspending threads.net and other variations, Threads treated the posts as spam, and returned this when clicking on a mas.to link: "Problem with this link..."

And two days ago, Facebook ran a routine that flagged and removed a year-old post because it contained my mas.to address.If I had to guess, I'd guess that this is a retaliatory move against servers that block Meta, as a way to force compliance.

@Gargron @mastodonmigration @rexum I don’t think it’s misleading at all. The foundational activity of surveillance capitalism is to collect whatever informational or behavioral data it can from whatever sensors it can; conflate via data matches and appends; build predictive models; and activate via algorithmic systems, or sell outright. The clause in Threads’ privacy supplement is a clear signal that the Fediverse will be an additional network of sensors feeding Meta’s data ecosystem.

@mttaggart Hey, well, my domain is currently blocking Threads, has 127,000 users (don’t know how many MAUs), and hasn’t signed the petition, so maybe the numbers are a bit off.

@mttaggart Just updated the MAUs, found them. I don’t know why they haven’t signed. The admin is not militant about it and explained their decision in a post, taking a wait and see what could go wrong attitude which I fully support.

@mttaggart It’s exactly wait-and-see, and given the known behaviors and history of Meta, it’s exactly the right move.
