@grammargirl There are so many odd language variants. My in-laws would "off the lights" or "gas the car" and their bedroom cabinets were called chiffoniers.

@grammargirl I know, so fancy! And they were Germans from Russia who grew up on farms and had a 6th grade education. No idea how that word appeared in their lexicons!

@aljazeera Ugh: "The AFP news agency said the building’s small balconies were surrounded by iron, with the apartment block having only a single exit – and no emergency ladder on the outside."When I lived in HCMC #ViệtNam I heard rumours that a lot of highrise buildings had "fire exits" that were permanently blocked. This is a terrible and unnecessary loss of life.

@grammargirl So many nouns have been verbed!I was never aware that contact was originally just a noun since I've probably used it more often than not as a verb.

@grammargirl Haha, I try to limit myself to one exclamation per post, so that I don't come across as overly crazed. That's not always successful.

@grammargirl It's my usual routine to make a big meal on Monday that I eat until Thursday so I don't have to cook while I'm teaching online in the evenings. I vary the side dishes a bit but the meat definitely stays the same all week.

@IdahoLark Ugh, sorry to hear that! #Covid is no joke and the numbers are rising again. Hope you get the chance to fully recover in the near future.

@IdahoLark@syringa.social The outcomes for aging adults have kept me quite #CovidCautious. Sorry that you were hit hard.

@IdahoLark@syringa.social @kegill@mastodon.social I hope to do another 4-week #roadtrip next spring, incorporating highway 90 across #Montana, #Idaho, and #Washington states. I need some #Seattle time after 7 years, as well as the #OlympicPeninsula. Southern #BritishColumbia as well.

@grammargirl@zirk.us It always baffles me that when folks use Robert's Rules of Order, calling "question" means "stop asking questions and let's vote" instead of, "I have a question"!

@IdahoLark I don't think any of the insurance companies in Canada covered it this year but it sounds like next year will be different. Since I mask almost everywhere I'd be exposed, I decided not to spend the big $ this year.

@IdahoLark Yeah, I also paid for the original Shingles vaccine and then realized that the coverage was very short-term. RSV was $300 but I don't have the ongoing paycheques to take that kind of a hit.

@grammargirl Haha, I'm old enough to get agitated about a "no problem" response to a thank you but I've since learned that it's the response in many languages other than English.

@IdahoLark Why not all 3? Most of my travel is tent camping these days but I love the unique settings where many hostels are located.

@dnc Bookmarking your itinerary! I hope to visit for at least 3 weeks, spring/2025 and I'd like to be able to visit the unique places around te country. The train and transit system makes it pretty easy to get around the country, thankfully.

@seungjin Haha, they're good but don't stay fresh for very long! If you can't get them eaten fast enough, they're good sliced into chunks and then toasted or sautéed in butter. Enjoy. At least you'll be able to enjoy great #Korean food as soon as you get back!

@seungjin Oh, both in HCMC, #ViệtNam and here in #YEG, I've been surrounded by Korean bakeries!! I've found that baked goods are very popular, especially croissants and cakes with whipped cream. Paris Baguette is only 300 metres from my place and was nearly as close in HCMC. I like the bread but I don't love it. However, I have very specific likes when it comes to bread.

@dnc If you watched the #kdrama "One Day Off", a single teacher goes on daytrips from Seoul to various little places, trying the food and seeing the sights. Interesting.
