@dave I'm going to sing. Making live music in a group is *so* great but impossible to do remotely

@Deet @Brookryn as a keen runner, I would just like to say I too am constantly frustrated by the shitty behaviour of some of my fellow runners right now. I have plenty of other whinges about walkers and loiterers but that would just be whataboutery to go on about it here. Lots of runners are being dicks and I'm sorry you have to deal with them :-(I and my running club friends are spending a lot of time on social media raising awareness of how to run safely and considerately. It's not even just about keeping distance, it's about not giving anyone cause to even worry that you might not keep your distance. It's analogous in some ways to the concept of Schrödinger's Rapist... Like, yeah OK, you know that you're a considerate runner, but how does some poor person out for a leisurely stroll in the park know that if you don't signal it very clearly? E.g. change course as early as possible, give more space than necessary wherever possible, slow down and (gasp!) stop if you need to to maintain distance.

Hi all, haven't been on here for a bit, have had other things to cope with.Just saw this blog post though which made me want to check back in and see if anyone else found it as ridiculous as I did: https://freethoughtblogs.com/intransitive/2020/05/17/she-escaped-amy-dyess-talks-about-the-cult-of-terfdom/Apparently we are a "chat forum" belonging to LGB Alliance, which is "part of" and "collaborates" with Gab.When I'm in the mood I sometimes enjoy reading nonsense like this...😁

@MandyJane I still read stuff there every now and then just to see what people are saying. I still appreciate most of what Mano Singham and Marcus Ranum write to be fair. But it's embarrassing to remember that FTB was where I first heard about these horrible "TERF"s and I uncritically believed almost all of it. I felt extremely virtuous for reading so much stuff by trans writers (especially as a straight male... it's like I wanted to prove to myself how right-on I was).

@MandyJane yeah, Ophelia's expulsion was what stopped me being a regular FTB reader, and in hindsight, ultimately started me moving towards the "gender critical" side.I think before that, Zinnia Jones had caused me a couple of serious wtf??? moments (pretty sure it was something to do with "female penis") but I wrote it off as just one eccentric author. Once the witch-hunters had seen off Ophelia though, it was clear that a majority of FTBers were all-in on the idea of innate gender identity, or at least, too spineless to say anything to the contrary.

@socjuswiz Agreed. Better to sit back, grab the popcorn and watch Morgane Oger argue with Adrian Harrop...

Finally done it thanks to JK Rowling's inspiration: posted and liked some firmly GC content on Twitter.I know it's not much, and it took me ages to get here, but this is definitely A Moment for me, and by the looks of it, tonnes of other people.I'm almost guaranteed a mere fraction of the abuse that a woman would get if she posted the same stuff. So I felt like I no longer had any excuse to be a cowardly lurker.

@MandyJane he's right on the money in that clip on Twitter. In the past I've been wary of him, basically because when he was talking about the influence of Islam, I saw him give Christianity too much benefit of the doubt. (rubbed up against my own views as an equal-opportunity anti-religionist.)But on this issue of LGBT++++ ultra-wokeness, he's really persuasive. Absolutely love that he's gay but kinda reserves that as a back-up trump-card.Might try and re-watch some of his religion-related stuff to see if my views on him have changed...

@MandyJane I feel there's at least a Spinster thread in there somewhere, maybe even a blog post... about recognising those ultra-woke instincts within yourself and working out what is genuine and what is essentially just egotistically being desperate to be one of the Good Guys.Like, I still remember what it felt like to have opinions well within the "woke mainstream", e.g. anyone whining about those poor oppressed trans people just needs to get over themselves, being quite relaxed about where the boundary for free speech is, not really seeing any problems with the Corbyn-ite left and Momentum. It might be interesting to catalogue how I moved away from that.

@greygoo well @Glinner pretty much set up Glindr.org so he and others could discuss feminism (like, actual feminism where "male" and "female" exist!) away from Twitter, in case he got banned... which has since happened as you know 😬I would say Glindr.org is probably the right place to have an account if you're male and interested in feminism. And even if you're not, it's as good a place as any to have an account which is part of the Fediverse. And yes, I'm male but have a spinster.xyz account (it's not against their rules and glindr.org didn't exist when I signed up). If I was getting a Fediverse account for the first time now, I'd happily sign up to glindr.org .

@Vaishax I tend to have a quick skim of the Fediverse tab every week or so, and actively follow anyone interesting. That way, the non-Spinster people I follow will just turn up in the "home" tab.I think it's fair to say that simply browsing round the Fediverse aimlessly can be quite frustrating and annoying at times (although it's admittedly eye-opening if you're in the mood for it 😁 )

@Vaishax oh, and crucially, I've muted the whole of gab.com . I found some interesting people on there but the sheer volume of "guns! USA! Christianity!" was too much for my taste. Absolutely believe in their right to exist (yay, free speech!) but I'm not obliged to provide them with space in my brain :blobwink:

@meghanmurphy really good interview, thanks! I particularly like @mk 's thoughts on(1) how to deal with feelings of jealousy towards other people in the same field;(2) how 'trashing' works and how to avoid contributing to it; and(3) empathy, particularly regarding one point at the end, basically "don't assume that if you can just (re-)educate someone they will necessarily agree with you".This last point also seems to me to be super-relevant right now for those police/prison abolitionists who ultimately think that crime can/should be completely (re-)educated out of the community... scary, totalitarian stuff if you follow it to its conclusion.

Hard agree. There's barely any element of culture that couldn't be argued to be appropriation of some sort. "shoulders of giants" and all that...There is definitely such a thing as bad taste, though, but that should be fine to criticise without calling for cancellation. e.g.:"Super-cool that you went to Peru once and were inspired to start selling ceviche back home, but maybe don't talk like you're the world's expert in citrus-marinaded fish.""What exactly were you trying to achieve by setting Wagner's ring cycle in pre-colonial New Zealand?"The criticism should boil down to "I don't really like this", not "you should never have done that and you should never have the chance to work again"@alex
