Any bands attempting to make the genre more friendly or antithetical to it's designed intent do not understand it. How the lyrics are delivered is a much different story though.

Also I'd make a point to read old fanzine archives and even geocities webzines for old interviews and the like. I would never have learned about Infernal Majesty or Order from Chaos if I hadn't read an old Dawn interview with Henke from like 1998 when they put out Slaughtersun.

I ignored some crust punk like Doom UK for years after I heard the abortion that was the band Aus-Rotten, and to a lesser extent ENT - A Holocaust in Your Head even though I actually loved that album when I checked it out, and they had If You're Only in it for the Music (S.O.D. Off!)
